dashboard light flickers; engine sounds rougher;

82 300d turbo. Orange light on dash. Symbol of circle on light.
Engine sounds a little rougher. Maybe loss of power uphill.
Engine appears to stall briefly (as if it's going to turn off); this coincides with the light coming on

That light is the front brake pad wear indicator light, shouldn't be related to a rough engine.

Check your fuel system for leaks, new filters?

That may be a battery thing, when running at too low an rpm to keep everything up to voltage.

yes it did seem to happen at slow speed or during idling. Did not see it before.

odd. I'd think the alt light would flicker, not the brake wear light.
perhaps someone took your cluster apart and got the stencils in the wrong holes?
WHERE is the light on your dash. take a pic, perhaps it's just in the wrong spot.

If there was a sudden large electrical load it might cause lights to flicker... is the wimpy stock alternator able to load the engine enough to change its sound at idle?
