What order should I do these in?

I am the new owner of an '83 300sd turbo diesel. It has 94,000 miles. I want to do the following things to the car soon:

1:maybe change filter screen on bottom of fuel tank
2:run diesel purge
3:change both fuel filters and o rings on secondary filter bolt
4:change air filter
5:change oil
6:change glow plugs and ream
7:clean ALDA(Which I am not exactly sure about what it is yet)

My question is what order should I do these things in, or does it matter at all. And is there anything else you guys think I should do soon? Also, I have found a few sources for these parts online, do any seem to be more reputable than others, or is it just personal preference, i.e. dieselgiant, mercedesource?

Thanks.

I think that order is ok, but you are much more ambitious than me if you intend on doing the tank screen first. That's on my "As needed list"

The ALDA is an emission device that tries to keep the fuel delivery in line with Turbo boost in order to reduce visible soot in the exhaust.

I didn't know what an ALDA was till a few years after I sold my 300SD. I drove my car from Seattle to Park City Utah and discovered that the car felt like it had about 40HP till the revs passed 2500 rpms, then it took off. I was baffled at the time, but the car returned to normal after getting back to Seattle, so I quit worrying about it. When I told the story my VW Mechanic, who drove an 81 300SD, he knew right away that it was the ALDA, and told me that he adjusts or removes them for people all the time.

The reputable parts place is at the top of the page. Click on the Buy Parts tab. there is "Fast Lane" and "All Parts Express". this is what supports this site.

I order parts in the morning, and usually have them the next day, unless it is Friday.

To save on shipping, I wait until i have a $100 order, then free shipping.

Nothing to really clean on the ALDA. but the pressure line from the rear of the intake manifold to the switchover valve can get gunked up.

Remove the banjo bolt. there is 2 flat washers on either side of the banjo, so don`t drop them. make sure the bolt is clean, and the line to the SOV. I spray in some brake clean, then blow it out with air. be sure to place a rag over the end of the line when blowing.

If the coming weather is going to be bad in your area I would do the Fuel Tank Screen as soon as you have the parts and the Fuel level is low.
I would also replace both the Fuel Oulet hos and the Fuel Return Hose down there also.
You can file or grind off the Brass Crimped Collar on the old Fuel Outlet Hose an yank off the Old Hose and replace it with some 5/16" Fuel Hose and some Hose Clamps.

If you plan on using any Bio Fuels there is Fuel Injection Hoses sold in the Regular Autopat stores that are rated for that.
Fuel Injection Hose SAE J30R9 or 30R90

Otherwise the regular Fuel Hose sold in the part stores is rated for diesel Fuel; SAE 30R7 is the Regular Fuel Hose. This is what has been on my car for close to 3 years now. And, yes I that is what is under my Fuel Tank.

It's pretty unlikely that your fuel tank screen needs to be "changed." The screen is pretty course and should clean up nicely, if needed. Do replace the o-ring, however. You also have a couple of o-rings on the oil filter pipe that seldom receive attention. They are often so hard that folks don't even realize that they are made of rubber.

The order is fine.

The ALDA is an automatic atmospheric compensator. The less pressure (high altitude, or no signal from the turbo) on the aneroid capsules, the larger they are, pressing a lever to limit fuel. As mentioned, if the pressure line from the manifold gets clogged, the ALDA will no receive a signal, thereby the capsules will remain large, limiting fuel, sometimes severely.

Sometimes the translation is off, see pic.

I agree with tango... you should be able to reuse the tank screen, they're pretty stout. You lost me on the "o-rings on the filter pipe" tho. Secondary filter banjo bolt?

Thanks, I really appreciate the info. Yeah I will definitely just clean the filter screen then. Seems pretty simple to do. I am really enjoying the car so far. It is a blast to drive. I just want to make sure all my preventative maintenance is done before winter so it doesn't let me down.

How is it that I can get 4 glow plugs plus a relay:

http://catalog.peachparts.com/item.wws?sku=W0133-1606169&itempk=76207&mfr=Bosch&weight=0.94

for less than I could get a relay alone. It seems the relay alone runs around $160-$175.

Different relay; different manufacturer; free market.

I would add 'Valve Adjustment' to that list.

I would not do one or two and would not replace glows until at least one goes bad. Otherwise do the filters and oil first.

Take it to a car wash and clean off the gunk, then make sure there are no significant leaks that need fixed soon, e.g. weeping oil cooler lines. Then work down your list. It would stink to change your oil, then discover you have a leaky pan gasket.

I've had good luck ordering parts from this site, but don't count out your local stores either, or the dealer (sometimes).

Also have plenty of buckets, plenty of rags and do a lot of reading first.

Maybe add a primer pump to the list if you're working on the fuel lines. A leaky one will sabotage your efforts. Dieselgiant has a good summary on cleaning the Alda.

The new one from Mercedes Benz is $20.80, and comes with the O-ring, if you go to the effort of pulling it out, why not put in a new one. My $.02.
