I finally lost a glow plug...
hey everyone,
In four years of diesel ownership I haven't had to replace a glow plug...until now. One of the GP's on my '85 has bitten the dust and measures over 10M-ohms. I want to cure the issue right away... Questions (did some searching and didn't find direct answers) 1.)I want to get a glow plug reamer, where is the best source? 2.)What article in FSM covers GP change? I didnt find it easily :-/ 3.)Do I need to take injection lines off to get the GP's off? I'd rather leave them alone. Thanks, dd

I bought my reamer off e-bay a few years ago, around $0.00 with shipping as I remember.
You can remove the GP w/o removing the fuel lines, but does make it easier. It is a little tight, but you can get your hands in there. I haven`t removed any in a while, but think they are 12mm. a Gear wrench works good getting in there. I use anti-seiz on them also when putting them back in. Be careful with those little nuts that hold the wires on. don`t drop them. I also put some litttle flat washers on either side of the wire connector. Charlie

#5 is the hardest to replace without removing interference. All the others are pretty easy to do with an open end wrench.
As stated, it is good to ream the holes when the GP is out as excessive build up can cause premature failure. Just another thing to think of: Since one has failed and you have never replaced them, it might be wise to replace all 5 with winter coming and all. They are cheap and can all be done within a couple of hours or less. I'd be glad to let you borrow my reamer for shipping only, or there is probably someone in your area with one too.

My research has turned up a few alternatives:
http://www.baumtools.com/pdf/Mercedes_Diesel.pdf (2nd page) #917-0053 is $89.25 #901-0053 is $66.45 El Paso Tool on Ebay: $34.45 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-Diesel-Glow-Plug-Reamer-El-Paso-Tool-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1c123e694bQQitemZ120565164363QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools#ht_719wt_1 167 ZDMak tools on ebay: $34.95 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Glow-Plug-Reamer-Tool-Repair-Parts-Tools-Mercedes-Benz-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27b5862c99QQitemZ170549193881QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools#ht_3375wt_ 1167 and finally Mercedessssssource (admins: the word and URL are banned from mention?) sells one: $40 shipped Any comments on any of these from folks who own them? That is an excellent price !! Which ones of the below do you have?

FWIW I have the "banned source" one and it works great. I do think it's overpriced for what it is though.

Thanks for the offer :-). I'm going to invest in a banned source one and go from there.
I'm definitely replacing all 5. I don't want to mess around with winter diesel driving and I have idea how old the current ones are (they are at least 25k and 6 years old). Ordering glow plugs is next. Are all Bosch gp's nowadays 'fast glow'? I notice only one Bosch alternative on the peach parts site.....

The Beru plugs are good too, they are made in Germany, the Bosch are made in France. I've always replaced them without removing anything else...it is possible.

if you don't remove the lines, at least remove the metal spacers that are bolted on the lines... them sharp edges will have you bleeding before the plugs are all changed!

I'm not sure there is one. Where the FSM normally points you to "Do this step like procedure 15-107" or something, it says "Unscrew rod-type glow plugs" in the procedure for removing the pre-chambers.

For occasional DIY use, a drill bit works just about as well as a reamer.

Dieseldan, the reamer I have is like the one ZDMAK and El Paso tools show. I think it`s one of these 2 I got it from.

I recommend shoving a shop rag or two in the space between the block and IP. I've lost many sockets to the mysterious void.

Magnet tool?

Get a reamer, they're cheap. I rented one, but the price difference is pretty small. A ratcheting box wrench helps. I did it without removing the fuel lines. Rags are a good idea. Have a magnet tool handy, too.

Always been far less hassle to remove the IP lines for me than to try to work around them for replacing GPs. It CAN be done with them in place.
The Bosch 80006 is after glow rated. I use them in my SD and SDL with factory extended glow kits and the Bosch replacement after glow on the SD.
