Excessive turbo whistle with a 3" exhaust?

I recently added a turbo and manifold from a 99 E300 to a 96E300. The turbo's donor vehicle only had about 125kmi. and the turbo was nice and smooth with no bearing play. I installed a pressure actuator for the waste gate to make it simple. I also fabricated a 3" stainless exhaust off the flange, with mandrel bends, and a Magnaflow XL at the end. The flow seems great. I have not driven the car yet because I'm doing alot of work to it, including interior, body/paint, mechanical.
My question is; With the 3" should I expect a great deal of turbo whistle? Because I'm getting it! At above 2500rpm it starts, or on forced throttle when I rev the motor out. I have a boost gauge in cabin, which shows boost building.
Thoughts?

how is the intake? most turbo whistle on these cars is heard at the intake through a k&n style filter.

I recently put a 3" turbo back exhaust on my 99'. The turbo sound is much more pronounced after having installed the new pipe. I am currently using a Brabus muffler intended for an E430 at the end of the system. Awesome growl.

It might very well be that I'm hearing it at the intake side, and Yes I do have a K&N type air filter. If it only does this when in park reving the motor, I do not care. I will have to see when driving if it whistles when on the highway at similiar rpm. Would a stock type paper filter eliminate or diminish the whistle?

I have a 2.5" pipe on my 300SD and you can hear the turbo quite a bit. When I get home and power the car off in my garage I can hear the whistle and spool down.

I am wanting to modify the exhaust on my 300SD, as well, since the mufflers have some small leaks. What muffler did you go with? or Is it straight piped? Do you have pics?

Straight pipe.

Splain what you mean "Power the car off". do you mean you rev the engine and turn the key off?
This would wind up the turbo, then winding down wouldn`t have the oil to lube it.

I have seen guys do this to gassers, rev the engine to high rpm`s, then turn the eng off as it winds down. this just fills the cylinders with raw gas.

Just askin

Only if it's carburated, EFI cuts the fuel flow.

I mean that when I pull in and its idling, and I turn it off, I can hear the turbo spinning down when the engine has stopped. I would never rev the engine then turn it off!

I just installed my stainless steel 3 inch straight pipe on my 87 300sdl. And I hear the turbo alot more then what I use to. The only way your going to find out if you don't like the over all sound of your system is to get the car up and running and take it for a spin. Loving your exhaust tone, notes and over all loudness is really up to the person driving it. Some guys like blonds, some guys like red heads.

"Do you like redheads Mr. Franks?" "Provided the cuffs and collars match,"

I'm okay with a little more sound, provided it sounds like a car and not a cummins, ... and has a nice note without raspy tractor sounds, a resonator or non-baffled straight-through muffler can IMO sweeten the note without taking too much away. I've heard enough school-bus exhaust thank you.

I tried a straight-pipe on my first (Cat Powered) motorhome, too much snap, installed a 6" Walker Megaflow w/o baffles and got down to a nice note with a constant whistle which saved me from watching the boost gauge (the boost gauge is a good way to get good fuel mileage).
