Rebuilding my Viscous Fan Clutch 92 OM602
I live in Central Fla. During stop and go traffic my temps increase to about 100C or so with the A/C running. As soon as I get moving they cool right down to 85ish or so. I checked the fan when you shut down the vehicle at the fuel pump shut down lever and the fan keeps spinning.
In the morning the fan is easy to turn by hand little to no resistance. I've ordered the 606 viscous fan clutch and plan on using the aluminum fan. Some say it's ok other say to use the plastic one. I'm frugal, didn't order the plastic fan. I'm going to try the rebuild first. Cause I can. I picked up 2 bottles 1.69 oz =50ml (should be plenty) of Silicone Oil 3000cst. Picked it up at Hobby Town USA. From the different post some say to use the 10000cst fluid. I went with the 3000cst for a couple reasons. 1 they had 2 bottles of it (only 1 of the others 5000cst, 6000cst and 10000cst). I'm concerned about not getting enough slippage or over spinning the fan. I know now I'm not getting enough now, but don't want to damage anything. (It's not coupling at all so some will be better than none). In one of the Toyota TSBs its printed that Toyota recommends 3000cst for most of their vehicles and the sporty celica got 6000cst. Looks like the bigger Toyota vehicles (Trucks/SUV) got the 10000 stuff. I picked up the "Pulley Spinning Tool" about $10 from Harbor Freight. The silicone oil (1.69 oz = 50ml) about $8 I picked up from Hobby Town USA. I've got the 8mm allen key to remove the center bolt. Not going to remove the radiator. But hope to move the fan guard to make access easier. It's the one piece design. My goal is to get the whole 50ml in the clutch. I'm not sure if I'm going to use the oven to heat it, hair drier, or syringe. I plan on filling through the activation pin. I'm open to any suggestions.

The electric fans only run on low below that temp, will cool better when you start to move, viscous-fan doesn't lock until about that temp, and has minimal effect at idle, viscous fan will spin after shut-down if it is not engaged from heat, normal, and little resistance to turning by hand cold is normal (not free-spinning though).

I don't want to make work for myself, are you saying that my fan clutch is working normally? It doesn't seem to be moving air.

The test for the fan is to fast idle the car until the gauge reaches (IIRC) 100*C, then the fan should engage, rev the engine and listen for the roar of the fan (hood open). The FSM has the correct temp., but I think this is close.
If you are seeing temps above 100C, then I'd be concerned regardless of fan operation. Also, if the fan seems to be operating properly, and temps are high, try to clean the space between the radiator and condensor.
