remanufactured calipers don't seem to have all parts

looking at either rebuilding my front calipers for a 1985 300sd or buying rebuilt ones at a local store. see attached link http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?A=SDC24271454_0230527224&An=599001+101985+50044+2044068#

this does not have the heat shield, at least not in the photo's. My questions are, do I need the heat shields and shims for proper brake control?

What do those parts actually do? are they redundant?

I pulled out the inner piston on the right front caliper. It has a few spots of pitted corrosion on it. I rubbed it over with a brass brush. It got some rusty stuff off the piston but when cleaning off all the mess, I saw the finish was missing in some tiny areas... The outer segment of the bore is also rusty so I am not sure if it is worth rebuilding or just get a rebuilt set and send these in for the core return...

Picture needed

You keep asking about heat shields, there are none on the caliper.
We need a picture of what the part is.

Pictures of the pistons are better than descriptions.

OK, will take some photo's today, later.

but, if you look at the Fastlane part no. W0133-1633803 which is a FAG brand product, the only metal parts were somewhere described as heat shields, I think.... Anyway, I see that part on photo's of new calipers but not the rebuilts that are for sale. Is that part necessary and is it sold seperately.

Hope this explains it a bit better.

as far as shims go, do they always go into the brake system? What do they do? Do they inhibit the other parts from sticking to each other dispite the road grime and heat?

A heat shield would be to deflect heat from the rubber parts of the caliper. This might be needed on the Autobahn where higher speeds would result in more heat all at once than here in the relaitvely sedate us. So apparently it is lost in translation when they are rebult and for most of us they aren't missed.

Thanks for that thought!

What about shims?

I just bought some shot in the dark lifetimes from the box store. They included the caliper and hardware to hold the pads in. ~ $50 each. The downside is I may get more practice changing them than I want. Check for hardware before leaving the store and look for obvious defects. I had to chase the bolt hole for the bolt that holds the wear indicator connector.

That's not a caliper heat shield. The caliper heat shields fit inside the pistons and contact the back sides of the brake pads.

The stamped metal pieces are anti-noise/rattle + to support brake pads during installation.

here's a photo of the inner piston. Pitted, guess I can't use a rebuild kit, have to get rebuilt or new calipers for the front.

I don't really think that is what it is for. I don't see it supporting anything. The piston is recessed for part the stamped metal to attach to the outer portion of it and the other part of the piston has full contact to the brake pad. The stamped metal is essentially floating there like a shield.... A heat shield to be exact...

Yep that is pretty much gone. You'll need another set of pistons to rebuild that particular caliper. Replacing them with good used units or purchasing rebuilt or new units are in order.
