DIY Magnetic Hood Pad
Okay so after reading the forum here I decided to order 1" Reinforced Foil acoustical foam from McMaster Carr for a replacement hood pad.
After looking at prices for 3M Adhesive I realize its cheaper, easier and far less messier to use these stick on flexible magnets Whats also cool is that you could easily remove your hood pad to wash and wax under the hood! Now what I am trying to figure out if item 5759K75 will have enough magnetic power to stick to the hood. Anyone want to chime in with any suggestions/tips/advice before I order I would appreciate it!

nope... use an adhesive
the crappy adhesive backing on the magnets still have to stick to the hood pad so just do it right the first time so you dont have to do it again. Go with a new OEM underhood pad and use the 3M "yellow death" adhesive. I forgot the number it is but you will regret this idea. |

even if it would work, the 126 drivers would be out of luck... aluminum hood....

One concern after reading, er, skimming the McMaster-Carr page is that the magnets appear to be rated for only up to 150 degrees F. I don't know if it is the adhesive that is the limiting factor for temperature, or the whether the magnetic material has a very low Curie temperature, but it seems to me that the under-hood temperature could easily exceed 150F on a hot day.
Cheers, let us know how it works out! Kurt

old hard drives
If you want to try your experiment, find some old harddrives. Break them open and extract the magnets. I took some magnets out of 5 old SCSI drives
to play with. I kid you not, they were the strongest magnets I've ever had in my hands, even after broken into smaller pieces they certainly would hold a hood pad. I put one on either side of my hand and they stuck. They would effect one another through a tabletop. Wow, a lot of fun

I got the idea from another forum. I will test the hood with a magnet for ferrous activity. This is a W201, pretty sure the hoods are steel.
I highly doubt the temperature behind a 1" hood pad with reflective aluminium on one side would be over 150F. PS: Who says I cannot use epoxy to secure the magnets

Too Much "Creative Engineering" Time spent...
On "Fix" already provided by Factory.

... I think the solar temps alone would bring the surface of the hood to over 150 on a hot day...

3M Super 77 Glue works the best, use it. It's cheap too.

I got a case of Nuclear powered contact cement from "Aviall" aviation supply. They keep a pallet of out of date stuff in the back. I go back there and shop from time to time. I'll try to get the brand name. Good stuff.

Neodymium magnets placed on the surface of the pad might press right through it and hold it in place if enough were used.
However, I'd stick with an adhesive.

I agree with the adhesive, I used the 8090 is like $20 at the hardware store for a big can. A hood pad can be had for $50...
