Hood Insullation -What adhesive to use?
 

I have swapped out the hood on my 87 TD with a 95 style hood. My old 87 sound deadening insullation with alum heat shield was in good shape and came off without too much damage. Just not sure what adhesive to us to reinstall in the 95 hood?

The second issue is how to keep it up there ones the glue is on? I'd prefer not to remove the hood to put it on since it has all just been repainted. I was thinking of several 2x4's with a flat piece of something at the end proped up under the hood to hold it up?

The old adhesive looked like the yellow 3M snot weather stripping adhesive. Just not sure how it holds up under heat and gravity????

Looks like 3M 8090 spray adhesive is the choice of many.......

If you install it with the hood completely open at 90 degrees it stay's in place easily. Use a couple pieces of masking tape on the hood and on the pad centerlines top and bottom as registration marks, spray adhesive on the hood underside and then in the pad's topside. Let it set up until tacky, fold the pad in half lengthwise and hold it folded with a couple clothes line clips. Then place the tape on the pad onto the tap on the hood at the center line at the top of the open hood and then at the bottom, take off the clips and lay one side onto the hood and then the other. Once it touches adhesive to adhesive it's not going anywhere. Let it stay like that for an hour and you shouldn't have a problem after that.

Sounds good. I followed a similar approach for the centering but I positioned and held the pad in place with magnets then removed the magnets from half the pad, folded it back and applied the adhesive. Unfolded to seat into the adhesive and secured with the magnets. Then did the other half. I don't know what they were intended for but the magnets that worked best were about 3-4 inches in diameter and had a knob for a handle on one side (looked a lot like a lid for a pan).

I carved my good one off the 85 300D and replaced the totally rotten crumbly thing that was in the 240D. Did that along with the 300D engine swap. I used the spray adhesive from Auto Zone. I think the 3M brand was like $30.00 and if I remember correctly I chose a brand that was like $23.00. I took the hood off - it's easy to take off, a bit more difficult to re-install. Sprayed the whole can after cleaning the underside well. Sprayed it in two directions, let it sit for 10 minutes and applied the pad. Very little opportunity to change once it is applied. I think to do it properly one should lay it in the hood and fit it well and mark the corners of the pad on the underside with a marker pen. Mine is off a little and I am unhappy about that, (but it is pretty close). I might have used 3M spray glue, I can't recall.

I just put a new insulation pad on my hood and used 3M adhesive spray. I bought it at a bond auto parts store in town. It cost $17.00.

It was super easy to put on and it seems to be holding just fine.

If you use the 3M 8090 adhesive correctly, it is a contact adhesive, and will stick when the pad and hood make contact, no re-positioning and no falling off.

My experience however, change the fuel bypass/return hoses and end-plug before the new pad or you'll be doing it again soon (painful lesson).

I could have used the yellow 3m stuff, but I got a generic for a few dollars less at Napa that did the job just fine.

Adhesive spray works fine. On one of mine Diesels, I bought a generic hood pad, cut it to size and my uncle and I installed it in about 15 minutes. When I had access to OEM pad, I was gonna replace it, but found the Spray adhesive worked all to well, and decided to give up on that idea. LOL.

Just looking through the garage and I found an almost full can of the 8090 3M stuff. It is about 5 years old I think, do you think the stuff goes bad?? Was one can enough for most of you? Hate to buy another if not necessary.....and it's pricey $$

I've used old contact adhesive without problems. I would think it would last for a long time in a sealed can. You could try to use it on something other than the hood pad and see if it sticks.

my 85 cd has a waffle type pad thats much better than the flat -crumbly type that disintegrates and falls to pieces all over the engine and inner fenders--where do you get a good waffle type replacement?
