Junkyard OM617 injection pump ?

I was browsing local pick and pull yard for some W123/W126 OM617 parts and notice the IPs on 2 different cars that had a hole in the top of the IP . Was this some sort of IP failure or was it from the yard crew draining fuel or a customer removing a part and ruining a potentially good IP ? - Thanks -

prolly a customer ruining a IP. OTOH that upper plate may be replaceable without needing a special machine
