Considering the volitile weather in the rockies during the spring, I'd suggest dipping south on the 40 to So Cal. It takes about the same amount of time, but is not nearly as beautiful.

I definitely concur with this piece of advice for two reasons:
  1. If you have car problems there are not as many service places open at night and it is hard to see what you are doing if you need to do a roadside repair, not to mention being dangerous.
  2. You will miss all of the scenery you have driven through.
If you are driving through SW PA and want to stop by for a visit and rest, feel free to PM me.

OTHT - he could do I-80 through Nebraska - Wyoming, hit SLC then take I-15 via Las Vegas all the way to L.A. OR the northern route to Sacramento on I-80, then south.

I'd do the I-80/I-15 Vegas run.....

There's deer like flies out at night - ran over a fat azz dead one in my coach on I-40 just out of Memphis running at night last year. that one would have F%#$&*#ed my ETD bad! Missed a live one by a couple seconds in the ETD in Texas 2 weeks ago at night - I'm almost out on the night driving without a deer guard on the vehicle - even then it wouldn't be pretty. The deer guard on the ETD would be classic.

Vegas is a good stop, but weather wise he might get into some trouble. Though I imagine being from PA he's not unfamiliar with snow.

I drove on i90 when it was closed in my car. I own a set of Blizzaks that go on during Thanksgiving.

I am no stranger to snow

I have friends who live in Phoenix so I'm probably going to go a bit out of my way to see them. Figure the desert might be nicer to me in January too.

AAA Plus

I'd do the trip in a heartbeat.
If you don't have it, get AAA plus. You get four free 100 mile tows.
If you get stuck in the middle of nowhere call for a tow truck,
have him take you 99 miles and drop you off, then call again for
the next tow for the next 99 miles--up to four times for free.
This was a tip from a AAA driver.
Fortunately, I've never had to use that trick, but I have had to be towed
90 miles two different times in our Chevy Tahoe. No extra charge for the tows.

I've been a member on here for a few years, although I was away for the past two (Mercedes-less, unless you count the 03 Dodge CTD ).

If I were you, I'd post a game plan as to your planned route, along with planned stops along the way. Knowing the extremely generous nature of the forum members on here (and I remember seeing one post here already before I hit the reply button), I'd be very surprised if you didn't find several people willing to have you drop by for a stop along the way every so often. You might make the trip longer that way, but you'll meet some very nice people that way who love the brand as much as you do.

Your car will probably be fine, but AAA is cheap insurance as well. A list of people along the way who could help with an intricate issue would also be invaluable to you.

My suggestion for route( I also stared at the world through a windsheild for a while) 80 west 81 south 40 west then 30, 20, 10, into LA. Coming back in the spring follow 15 to 70. Avoiding snow on the way out seeing spring in the rockys on the way back

2X on the southern route

Go the southern route. From Amarillo to LA there are no bad grades, although into and out of Albuqueque is like Route 13 heading north out of Ithaca.

Don't drive 65. You will get run over in flyover land. Some of the western interstates have speed limits of 75 or 80. The only thing you could do worse is drive in the left lane with your turn signal on.

Other than that one issue, layback40 gave terrific advice which everyone should follow on every trip.

The I-70/I-40 route looks good. Got plenty of experience of the I-80 route and the I-10 routes. My concern would be icy/snowy weather. (Just the general purpose of it). But in this day and age. It's easy to find a place to stop and hunker down.
You could always diverge further south towards Dallas,I-81, I-40, I-30, I-20 to I-10. You'll see plenty of Texas that way.
Sounds like a heck of a road trip. Bring some music, some parts of the country have sparse coverage. We used to ship stuff from LA to Jacksonville FL. We shipped stuff in a dish pack (box about 24x24x30) cost was about $1 a pound or about $50 per box. DHL had the best rates. Took about a week. That's another option for getting stuff out there.

Road trip sounds great.

The CB is definitely a good idea, as well as a piece of paper with all important numbers you will need.

Plus a car charger for the cell phone, or even an extra battery if you have one (I do). PLus a couple of good flashlights.

And..in case:
one meter of rubber fuel line + a couple fuel filters in case the local fuel is bad, not your fault

If you have it, a battery /light/air compressor which also connects to the cell phone

A list of locations that have free wifi along your route
A list of truck stops along your route
one aluminum jack and jack stand.

For two years, I drove across the USA towing an enclosed trailer that was delivering high-value cars to their destination quietly. Made lists like this quite often.

It's always nice to have working AC, even when you move back to PA. That is a very pleasant time of year in SoCal. And it kinda depends on where you are living. Coastal you definitely won't need it, even in the summer. The farther inland you go the less temperate it gets - colder in the winter, hotter in the summer, and wider daily temp swings. And the further south you go the warmer it gets. I'd say don't do it unless you have the time and the money. You'll probably get more use out of it in PA next summer than in LA this winter.

Car Abandonment

Depends on what the breakdown is. Even though an alternator can take three days in a hotel to repair (sending for the part to BFE), to me, it is not worth ditching the car. (BTW, some parts can be replaced without removing the alternator, from above and below.) I would consider a FUBARed auto tranny a reason to ditch an old car, but the original purchase price is not part of my equation for figuring the future value of a car. I kept a free '68 Rambler going for years, including 2 transmissions, because ultimately, it was cheaper to keep that one pasted together, than to upgrade to another car with promises of more expensive repairs. I gave it away/loaned it to another reservist during the '91 Gulf War at 300K, and he returned it at 400K. I passed it onto my cousin (needing a front end rebuild) and she got at least another 50K out of it.

I have been also taken advantage of by unscrupulous mechanics while being out there on the road, and have also gotten things repaired for under $20 and an hour of my time.

Also, Adam . . . . for your safety, help, and advice . . . . That's why WE'RE here. I'm sure someone will lend a hand while you're making the trip, should you have problems. And some of us are old enough, that we remember doing what you're doing, and have laid the groundwork to make sure your trip is "uneventful."

IMHO,

The Old Lady

Yes you could cut south of 40 and go down thru Lubbock and then Roswell-Ruiodoso and stay in the ridge thru AZ-small mountain towns Payson and Prescott and then southwest to Parker-and to Joshua Tree CA like the trucker lady recommended-This would be a most scenic trip that most dont see traveling between I10 and I40.
