Working on the '99 E300 today

Well I've had the delivery valve leaks for months and had the rig parked out in the shop - only moved it twice since November - yes 2009.

Did get the delivery valve seals replaced, fuel filter, prefilter and cleaned out the IM - what a filthy mess that was. Also got as much gunk out of the top of the head that I could reach. Is there anything blacker that gunk?

Still have some other preventative maintenance to do. Need a new serpentine belt, did replace the shock.

She's in need of a bath but I did snap a couple shots of the engine bay.

I seem to have a yet undisclosed problem - I'll have to post on that after this is tightened up.

Must say I love opening the hood the full 90 degrees.

If yours needs a bath, mine needs a flame thrower. Beautiful engine and condition. Lots of luck with the car. My 96 was not abused, but not well cared for cosmetically. It was a long term lease car with 194,000 miles on it when I got it, and it now has 217,000. Non-turbo, but I love the car, and runs like a champ!!!

Good going on the R & Ring so far raMBow!

The 606es are a thing of beauty. I marvel at their attractiveness. Much, much prettier than my ex-fiance'.

Must say I did have to snap a picture of her with the "top" off.

Need some more time to finish it up and get it completely back on the road.

Looking all clean now. Thanks for the screensaver. I don't look forward to the day I have to do the DV seals, but I know that it is just a matter of time.

x2, while you have it off, might be a good time to have it cleaned. Any time I take mine off (which isn't very often), I take it to the local machine shop, so it can take a bath in the hot tank. $40 later, I get it back quite literally clean enough to eat off of. The hot tank really melts all the black oil/soot sludge away.

Read more closely:

In hindsight I should have taken the IM to a shop. It is now darker on the outside with all the sloshing around etc. Pondered taking to be sandblasted. Would just cooking it refresh the outside?

Did go back to an old standby for hand cleaning. Straight Dawn liquid, Comet or other abrasive cleaner and a scotchbrite pad, oh and a knife under the fingernails.

Funny thing today at work, my mind goes "DING" - Somebody put the pre-filter in w/o the ^&%##*& o-ring on it. Glad I thought of that!

Just replaced the fuel line on the back of the IP - not so easy to get the banjo bolt out.

New fan belt tomorrow night. Maybe look things over Thurs morning and bolt the IM back on and see what happens. Oh, and install new battery - 10+ years old and sat for 8 months will do that.

That is precisely why I asked the question. Trying to clean one of those yourself is next to impossible because of the "length" of the runners.

When I pulled my lowly 617 manifold off, I stuck it in a tub of B99 for a whole day and I still had a hard time getting the black goo off.

If I had it to do over, I would have bought a new (used manifold) had it "hot tanked" or "media blasted" and dealt with the old one at a later date. It "IS" that much of a PITA....

Good thing you caught it! What made you think of that?

That's just the way I'm wired. I remember putting the new one in and thinking it looked a little funny, but thought nothing of it. Took it back out when I got home, looked at the old one in the trash - YEP...

On the PITA Lowe's had some dryer vent brush from Lowe's which worked very well. http://www.wdrake.com/WalterDrake/Shopping/ProductDetail.aspx?CID=Home&SCID=Clothes+Care&ProductID=0000077387&SourceCode=20509000007&mr:referralID=6efa8983-e165-11df-ad8e-001b2166c62d

Would like it to look decent when I put it back on.
