I also was looking at those around 2004 diesel VW. It seemed like there was a question about their reliability. I'm sure that con be said about any car though I guess. I did notice that you can get a 2004 diesel VW for around $7,000 and teh only diesels they make now are around $40,000. I'm sure there is a lot of stuff behind the scenes there business/government regulations/clean diesel technology, but I was wondering if they realized they couldn't make a reliable $15,000 diesel.

Dan has told me that the fuel savings on his TDI was awesome, but it didn't equal out to the big bucks he had to pay for a new timing belt and a host of other regular maintenance items required.
I'm teetering on the fence of selling my two W123's and getting a "real" car to drive daily. Will keep the W124 though......
