'93 300D Transmission Replaced...now...

I have a whining sound that didn't exist before.

I hear it at idle and under throttle.

I know that I didn't tighten the exhaust clamps enough but I'm pretty sure I got everything else locked down.

Could the whining be the sound of the turbo spooling at low rpms leaking out the imperfect seal in the exhaust?

I need to tighten the one under the hood and the last joint of the exhaust as well.

What else could it be?

I also replaced the torque converter with the one that came on the replacement transmission.

The replacement had/has 120K on it.

It really sounds the way a manual transmission sounds when you reverse.

Is there a way to install the torque converter improperly?

Something more to add is that the replacement transmission came from a '92.

I have confirmed that the whining noise that increases with RPM is in fact coming from the transmission.

It works and shifts beautifully but there is a whining that makes me uneasy.

WTH could it be?

Could improper installation cause that?

I remember reading that if the torque converter isn't just right it could lead to pump failure.

I guess I just don't see how I could install the torque converter any other way than the way I did it.

It bolts to the fly wheel and the housing bolts to the engine.

I don't know.

I guess this is why people by new or rebuilt transmissions.

How long before implosion if it's the front pump?

The front pump can make a whining noise, it is a gear pump. Will it fail soon? Don't know, was it new/used/reman? I would take to whomever sold or rebuilt the transmission and have them listen to it.

It's used and I bought it off eBay.

It has 120K according to the salvage yard selling it.

It shifts great and the only thing I've noticed is the whining.

The seller said he would warranty it for 30 days and I would have to pay return shipping.

I paid $625 for it including shipping.

If I can get a year of use it would be worth it I suppose.

It actually came off a '92 so it has a rear pump that '93's don't.

What would the second pump do?

Somebody on here suggested that with the rear pump I could pull start it if necessary like the W123's.

the 2nd pump is generally for flat pull starting like you would do if you had a manual Transmission. thats one use of it anyways

I'm not positive. But I think the pump was deleted starting in 92. Here's a really good link:
http://w124-zone.com/downloads/photos/300TE/remove_tranny/transmission%20repair.pdf

According to the troubleshooting section: Pg 105 Howling noise which increases with increasing engine speed. Check primary pump and renew, if required.

I also noticed significant friction plate material in the pan when I dropped it.

There was a flake of it about half the size of a dime when I opened it up.

It also had about a dozen small pieces of stuff resembling paraffin.

I placed a pretty big magnet on the pan to catch any metal that is floating around but I'm not sure what else to do.

It's used and it was half of what other used ones were going for.

My only concern is that it strands me someday without warning.

I'll keep an eye on it but at this point I am stuck with it unfortunately.

Could shimming the transmission do any good?

Could the torque converter sitting too deeply into the body of the transmission cause this?

Another thing I noticed is that the starter is making more noise than it did before like it's not quite lined up with the fly wheel.

Something's off and I'd really like to minimize any undue wear if possible.

It's too bad I've never torn open a transmission before because it's all Greek to me at this point.

I don't know the part number for mine but when I see "123" I assume it's for a W123.

Either way, if I tear open a transmission I would want to completely rebuild it.

Actually, now that I have had a look at the one I took out it looks like the front pump is actually accessible from directly behind the torque converter. I don't know what kind of a can of worms that would entail opening but at first glance it looks like it can be done without splitting open the tranny.

If the whining gets any worse or the transmission starts acting funny I may just pull it again(ughhhhhh) and swap them out because whatever problems I had with the last tranny a whining pump wasn't one of them.

Which brings me to my next query:

What must have failed if I had to rev up the engine to almost 3K down to idle and back up again a few times for it to grab?

The fluid was never burned nor did it have any friction material visible in the fluid.

Now that I have it out of the car the torque converter seems really loose inside. It rattles when I shake it.
