I just changed the vacuum pump from what I assume was the original to a new design pierberg. The oil has about 4k on it[had a window oil change sticker], not sure as I have no service records, po mentioned delvac. I have only driven it 200 miles since I bought it, wanted to get it running before changing the oil and green coolant out. I havent swapped the o-rings out yet. I'll probably get to it next weekend.

ah. first thing on purchase of a used vehicle would be to change the oil for me. and start with new o-rings on the filter lid shaft! 4K is high for dino oil on any diesel, but on the edge of ok for a 603, assuming it was changed properly last time. IIWM, I would swap the filter, drain and refill with dino oil, rotella or delvac, etc, put on the new o-rings, and give it 500 miles, and change the filter, and put in some delvac1/m1 5w40 or your preference of synthetic diesel oils. see how the lifters respond to new oil.

Could it be just air still in the lines after pulling the injectors. I know there are some knowledgeable member who aren't too far from you. Might be just diesel related if your used to a gasser.

how are you determining the oil has about 4K on it? because the mileage is about 4K above the number written on the sticker? or is it that you are figuring a 7500mile oci, and you have 3500 left on the mileage before you reach?
a lot of if not all oil change places write the number of miles you should be showing when it is time to change the oil.
keep this in mind.

The PO changed his own oil and put a sticker with the mileage at the oil change on it. So that is how I'm guessing at 4k. Like I said, I've driven it 200 miles, fully intended on changing in the next couple days, just was pondering whether to use synthetic or pour a little atf or seafoam/risolone (sp?) in before I change it out. Just was worried it was a rod and I've got to park it and pull the motor rather than waiting for a lifter to unplug/pump up.

It did have the noise before but al the fuel lines were wasted (just changed them) form the PO running Biodiesel (from a station). Seriosly if anyone local could take a listen that would be awesome.

So I have been running it with 2 quarts atf, for about 20 miles so far. Just to double check, I cracked the injector lines again since some of the combustion noise at idle is gone now after driving it a bit. Well the clank at idle makes the noise get significantly quieter when I crack #2. Does that pretty much confirm the rod bearing? or should I give it a bit longer with the atf? I figure doing bearings and swapping in the new head would't be too bad If the crank can be turned.
Thanks,
Ashley
