I just changed the vacuum pump from what I assume was the original to a new design pierberg. The oil has about 4k on it[had a window oil change sticker], not sure as I have no service records, po mentioned delvac. I have only driven it 200 miles since I bought it, wanted to get it running before changing the oil and green coolant out. I havent swapped the o-rings out yet. I'll probably get to it next weekend.

ah. first thing on purchase of a used vehicle would be to change the oil for me. and start with new o-rings on the filter lid shaft! 4K is high for dino oil on any diesel, but on the edge of ok for a 603, assuming it was changed properly last time. IIWM, I would swap the filter, drain and refill with dino oil, rotella or delvac, etc, put on the new o-rings, and give it 500 miles, and change the filter, and put in some delvac1/m1 5w40 or your preference of synthetic diesel oils. see how the lifters respond to new oil.

Could it be just air still in the lines after pulling the injectors. I know there are some knowledgeable member who aren't too far from you. Might be just diesel related if your used to a gasser.

a lot of if not all oil change places write the number of miles you should be showing when it is time to change the oil. keep this in mind.

So I have been running it with 2 quarts atf, for about 20 miles so far. Just to double check, I cracked the injector lines again since some of the combustion noise at idle is gone now after driving it a bit. Well the clank at idle makes the noise get significantly quieter when I crack #2. Does that pretty much confirm the rod bearing? or should I give it a bit longer with the atf? I figure doing bearings and swapping in the new head would't be too bad If the crank can be turned.
Thanks, Ashley
