Went to look at it today. I'll be picking it up tomorrow as a first car for my daughter who currently has a permit and will get her license in the Spring. Mechanically, it seems to be in excellent condition despite the mileage. Dave had no paperwork on the engine rebuild but the insignificant amount of blowby seems to confirm that it has been rebuilt. Started right up cold but the weather was pretty warm today. Paint is ok. A few places show weathering and there are a few odd scratches here and there. No major dents. AC works. Biggest question is the transmission. It seemed solid. 310k on the original transmission is a lot. Maybe it was rebuilt at some time. Dave had no knowledge of that. It shifted fine. MB Tex always looks better in these high mileage vehicles compared to leather.

Has a lot of other nice MB's. A black 126 SD, a nice 79 280SEL, a very nice 300CD and an SL.

I always seem to get a dirty look from my wife when working on my 85 as my answer usually is "I have to get it ready for our daughter"


Our daughter is 10 months old:)

My son gets the 85SD if he learns to work on it or has a job so he can pay someone else to work on it. If not, he gets whatever he chooses and can afford.

Will she get to inherit your tools early?

I rented a garage to an old man who liked my daughter. Shortly before he died he told me my daughter could have the contents of his garage when he died. The contents included a lot of tools. She'll start to put them to use in the near future.

I'm going through the same thing for my 15 year old. I've decided I want to get something newer for her. I also think I want a 4matic so we can use it for snowy days when she probably shouldn't be driving anyway. I will probably end up with a 5-10 year old c-class or e-class; I haven't really spent much time looking yet; I hate car shopping.

Is she interested in this wonderful gift?


Or will you be fixing the car alone? Could be a wonderful opportunity, otherwise.

Congrats for being blessed with a curious, yet rational child. Many of us weren't.

My recently licensed son is driving my 85 300SD. At first he wasn't thrilled about driving an "old people" car, but he has become somewhat attached to it. He told me that a couple of girls he knows think old Mercedes are really cool! He has been driving the Excursion while I am replacing the steering box and front brakes on the SD and he actually can't wait to get back "his" Mercedes! He knows how to change the oil, tires, and check all the fluid levels as of now, and soon he will have changed out a steering box. He is definitely being initiated into the "there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes" club!
