Graphite horn brushes
Hello all,
Recently the horn in my 1982 300D quit working. It appears that the graphite brushes are worn down by the steering wheel slip ring and are not making contact when I hit the horn. When I short them together the horn works. Are brushes available and can they be replaced easily? Are there any standard commercial brushes that will interchange? Any tips for installation would be appreciated. Thanks -Alex |

I haven't seen what the horn ring setup in a Mercedes, but I had the same problem in a Toyota Corolla. It must been like this for years, until one day I honked the horn. We really don't need horns. I think I honked the horn only once this year. When I lived in the Philippines, the horn was very important. I had a microswitch on the stick shift and a microswitch for the passenger to use. One day the hose let lose on my air horn. I had to stop and fix it before I could continue.
Anyway, here's how I solved the problem. I unscrewed the horn ring from the column and shimmed it up with small washers. The thought of worn graphite contacts never came to mind. I thought the horn ring worn out. I hope this helps. |
