buy parts or an old car

Hi,

my W115 needs some parts..... quite a few
so the question is would it be cheaper and wiser to buy lots of parts or get an old car with a failed engine and some rust and transfer all the bits on to my W115, (transferring the engine from this car to a car with a good body is not an option either) there are lots of parts I need plus parts that were in the car that I don't even know exist! so I wont know to order them but if I get an old car then I can tell "oh my car doesn't have that, it must be missing" and I can transfer it on to my car I guess there are little bits eg: little clips and connectors ect... that I probably wont be able to order and probably cost more all together

PS: my car needs a re spray anyway so a donor car with a failed engine and a little rust wont be a problem

so what should I do find a donor car or order all the parts individually (if I can find all those little bits too) ?

If you are fortunate to
.Not be an apartment dweller (antfarm)
.dont live in an area where the code goon can mess with you
.have an understanding spouse
.live in an area where old cars rust out
it would be worth it -knock yourself out, just kidding-you can do it as you damn well feel like it.

The only bad thing I see with buying the whole parts car is that several of the parts you need from it might be as damaged as yours so you'd need to go get them anyway...

Answer

How much will the car cost $xxx.xx

Cost benefit analysis:

Here are just a few of the current part cost list:

NEW injection pump $5,920.00 USD..

New trailing arm $3,190.00 USD each..

New steering gearbox $4,040.00 USD..

New steering wheel $650.00 USD..

NEW Left front door shell $985.00 USD..

NEW Heater core $650.00 USD..

NEW Blower motor $398.00 USD..

IMO: Two parts cars would be a great idea, if you have the money/space.

Both. Many parts deteriorate & finding the exact parts you need may be a challenge. Find a car with major parts that you need and fill in by ordering and going to the yard.

Going back -I should have found a parts car and pulled all that I needed. Inevitably not all the parts will be there or good, but with the right find, most will. You can still sell the rest of the car for a few hundred to a yard, or part out the remaining good stuff.

.....if you have the time, money and space for it.....

I need a whole new interior and some other parts steering box ect.....
since these cars aren't so expensive would it be cheaper to get down a car with a bad engine from the UK or something?

Cars aren't as cheap as they used to be in the UK - particularly when they have a (kind of) classic status.

The biggest problem you'll face is the shipping costs... For the hassle and money involved I'd say no don't even go there!

If you have a place to keep it, there's nothing that substitutes for the right parts car IMHO.

Parts Car USA

There are plenty of really nice 115-300D Non Turbo Parts Cars in the US. One is available in my area(sw IN) that is a Euro Model. It needs a transmission and a starter but it has been a very nice running car with a excellent engine. The transmission is slipping and the starter solenoid just clicks now. Interior is very nice and the exterior has very little rust. Jim
