126 left real lower control arm
I recently bought a 126 300SD for my daughter. Looking thru the records I see that the left rear lower control arm had been replaced. Asked the PO what happened. He said it just broke when he was driving so he had it replaced. I looked at one other 126 SD before purchasing this one. The left rear lower control arm was broken on that one also. It had rusted thru. I looked closely at the underside of that car. There was no evidence of any other rust.
What's the deal with these left rear lower control arms? Just a fluke that I've only looked at 2 and both had broken arms? Was there a design problem?

Maybe it was a fluke... mine's just fine. I haven't heard of any design flaws on this respect. The cruise control however...

It's always been the right side for me, my guess was the side of road being driven on splashing more water on a certain side.

It was very odd. There was no rust anywhere on any body panel. No rust around the jack points. No visible rust underneath on the chassis. The only visible rust was directly at the spot that the control arm broke about 6-8" inboard of the wheel. Even the exterior surface of the broken control arm had no rust on it. While I did not have a lift or a jack when I was looking at it, I did crawl underneath pretty far. I'm pretty sure that control arm rusted through from the inside out. I think if someone had looked at it prior to it breaking, they would not have suspected any rust problems.
When the seller told me that the car had a broken control arm I assumed that someone had hit a curb hard or the car had come from the rustbelt. But there was no evidence the car had ever been driven on salted roads. It looked like other Colorado cars.
