tie rod won't turn
I'm trying to do a basic string alignment in my driveway. I just want to improve the pulling until I get new tires and get it aligned. One of my tie rods turned just fine with my hands once I got the clamps and nuts loose. The other one is not wanting to budge. I'm wondering if there is some way to turn the rod with a tool to get some more leverage? I guess it's just been on there a while and the threads are rusty or something.

To expect old tie rod adjusters to loosen by hand might be a little much. Perhaps in the southwest that is common.
A pipe wrench with a rag might be a tool you have at home. The rag to limit scarring. Up here we have to actually apply some heat to get them mobile often. |

Yep, same happened to me when I did my tie rod ends... used a torch and my brother-in-law's stronger-than-mine arms and out she came. I didn't try to turn it in the car as I might have damaged the rod ends... I unbolted the tie rod ends (both inner and outer) and took the arm out, then torched it and loosened the tie rod ends.

Well, I have a new tie rod in the box, it sounds like it might be easier to pop the old one off than try to unstick the old one. One side seems to turn but the other is solid. I wonder why they did not put a hex on the sleeve to allow grabbing it with a wrench?

So much better if you have a new arm; just take the rie rod ends from the old arm (I'm assuming it's the outer arm here, right?) and screw them in the new one. The torch will still help you take out the seized one.
