300SD Model for Germany

I found a 1985 300SD, from what the owner tells me he got this car when he was stationed in Germany, picked up the car straight from the factory. Is it worth any more than the cars made for North America version (he is asking 3K)? I am looking for a car I can use the engine to rebuild and replace the one in my current car.

That would be a euro delivery car, not a euro spec car. It is built to US standards. 1985s have a couple nice features like the outside temp display, ABS, and optional airbag.

Exactly ... these cars were NOT sold to the German market.

For $3k, by the time you're done with the rebuild you're in the same price range as a Metric Motors rebuilt, without the warranty.

What is wrong with the SD? is the body rotted out? If it is a good body, makes no sence to buy the car for just the engine.

X2 on cost of buying the car plus the rebuild. I paid 6K for my metric engine just about 4 yrs ago. you get a 4 yr 50K mile warranty.
I picked up the engine from metric, that saved shipping, he knocked off 10%, and didn`t charge sales tax. this also included the $500 core charge if the head checked out good on the old engine.

I live less than 400 miles from them, so no big deal.

I know that is a lot of money for an engine to put into a car that is worth far less. anything happens to the car, the engine is going into something else.
