Injection Pump Seal
Hello Dieselheads,
Been searchin around the forms of late and haven't been finding what I'm looking for so im just gonna ask. OM617.951: 1981 Mercedes 300SD- Where the injection pump and the block meet, that seal is bad. Actually its terrible, one can actually see oil dripping out of it from underneath. My question: Is there anyway I can just unbolt the injection pump, marking its exact position in comparison to the block, pull it out, clean it up, put on the new seal, and put the pump back on? If I don't spin anything during the process, can I just bolt it back up without having to retime anything? Thanks.

I'll start by saying that I've never done this so my answer is based on what I've read.
I would turn the cranshaft until the IP locking tool slides in, lock the IP, mark it's position and pull it. It'll be real tricky to get the splines lined up when putting the IP back in so that the marks line up but with patience I think it could work. If you don't use the IP locking tool then what is most likely to happen is that you will insert the IP and in rotating it to line up the marks you will change the timing.

The Seal in the front of the Fuel Injection Pump is a Gasket.
Unforunately you cannot just randomly pick a spot to stop the Engine and marke the IP flange and stick it back in later. The reason for that is that if inside of the Fuel Injection Pump the Element Springs will push down on the Fuel Injection Pump Camshaft and rotate it. Somewhere in the below links there is instructions what degrees to line up the Crank Damper on when you pull the pump out and what position the splined shaft needs to be lined up to when you install the fuel Injection Pump.
