87' 300sdl turbo leak??
2 weeks ago I changed injector nozzles at 171K miles. The old injectors where really clogged, one wouldn't even spray when I did the "before" injector POP test. During the injector install I took the snorkle connecting the turbo to the intake manifold off. It would LOADED!! with oily carbon gunk hard caked on from above where it connects to the turbo all the way to the intake manifold. I thought this build up may have been caused by an open EGR and half burned fuel from clogged injectors recirculating and causing the gunk. Does diesel do that? I have since made a plate and blocked off the EGR.
within 1 week of driving with the blocked EGR, the low oil level sensor came on, I still have pressure on the dash gauge. I added a quart, within 100 miles the light came on again and again the oil is low. When a turbo is leaking oil, can it consume that much? I have the intake of the turbo exposed and it does not appear to have play in it, but it is also hard to reach to really push on it. I am assuming it is the turbo leaking. Is it possible that with the EGR being stuck open that the turbo was spinning much so the leak wasn't as bad, and now that it has full exhaust pressure it is spinning and spaying oil? the car definitley has better pickup and responsiveness since I capped the EGR. Now it appears that the oil is still leaking up the intake since there are drip signs where it connects tot he intake manifold. Perhaps the hot EGR exhaust was burning the oil??? Now with now gas, just oil spray?? Also when I remove the oil fill cap and run the car "blow by test", there is not any pressure out of the hole. As I have the turbo exposed, I am at the point where I need to unbolt it, but it is not clear where I should unbolt it. All of the internal bolts are really hard to get to and I read from many posts that the exhuast manifold doesn't need to come off. Guildance is much appreciated here. Thank you in advance!
