93 2.5 turbo into a 95 E320d
My 93 300D was rear ended and the insurance company totaled it. The engine is excellent, less than 200,000 miles and brand new vacuum pump, timing chain, and glow plugs. I found a 95 with over 300,000 miles on it. The car looks and run great. My question is, if the engine in the 95 goes bad, shouldn't the engine and trans from the 93 bolt right into the 95 fairly easily?
Thanks!

I bought a '95 for just this reason, and had an '87 300D donor. Bolting the engine and transmission is easy.
However, power steering looked like it'll bolt up, A/C will not, alternator will, need the entire wiring harness from the D (including many wires that go into the dash area and fusebox) or lots of scabbing, tall rear diff matches the OM603 engines' 2.65:1, fuel plumbing and pumps on the E are for gasoline, pumps etc. need to be removed, gauges change (with associated wiring), remove unleaded-fuel reducer in fuel inlet neck, heater hoses different, radiator different, no oil-cooler mount in E, different weight/springs, exhaust, etc., etc. Much more as you get into it that I can no longer remember. Then you get into the legal part, especially if you live (or move) somewhere with emission testing, I gave up the project and sold the '95 after I found a nicer '87. I hope you figure it out and do it, would make a nice car. Seems like with all of that trouble though, it should be a 606 turbo.

It would be great to see someone complete this as I think the best option for this type of swap is into a later wagon. Even with a sedan, the ground work is similar.

I thought about it, as I have several diesels at the moment, and a few gassers, with various issues, but the many swaps needed outweighed the potential gain.
besides, there are 95 e300D's available for sale, and like mentioned, the 606 turbo is a tad peppier than the 2.5 TD...

ahhhh. much different.
the trans will stay with the 95, and it's sundries. should be a boltin... power should be similar... I'd opt for a turbo 606 myself, but the 2.5 is a fine powerplant when in perfect tune. unlike the 123/126, the shorter engine in the 124 has mounts more forward, so it should bolt right in, and fit fine. no mess of lengthing the driveshaft and moving the tranny mount like needed on a 123/126... measure everything and see if they match. but I think it should bolt right in.
