vaccum problems>> 1981 240d Auto

So here's way I got going on:
I have alot of questions and not alot of time or money. However, I do have tomorrow off and a new mighty vac, so I am ready to start in on my vacuum issues.

I tee'd into the main line and when I did I broke one of the plastic fitting off the bottom of the inline valve or whatever the hell it is....I need to know what this is and its purpose.(IT HAS, OR DID HAVE, TWO LITTLE FITTINGS COMING OUT THE BOTTOM) I bypassed that thing and found that I have 13" of vaccum. when I apply the brakes it drops to 10" than increases to over 20". I also replaced a vaccum line that goes to the switch on the valve cover.

Now you have to really wind the car up to get it to shift into over drive. Not sure what kind of vacuum I should have in my main line.

What I really need is a picture of to go by as mine vacuum lines have been all hacked up by the PO and I don't know what should be where and if there is anything missing.

To some it all up I got a cluster $%# on my hands and need to get it sorted out!

Normal vacuum is aroundd 20-21 inches at sea level so yours seems low. Maybe a leak in the brake booster. Check directly at the pump and see what you get.
Delayed shifts are typically a problem with the bowden cable if you have one or the kickdown switch. Vacuum controls the harshness of the shifts (unless you have a transmission solely controlled by vacuum)

81 was a transition year, but you mention a switch on the valve cover, so check the pic, is this your set up?

You're going to need a new main line, I'm thinking, as the plastic piece with two orifices need to be vacuum tight. One goes as shown in the attachment, the other goes to "other consumables", such as the door locks, ignition shut off and HVAC pods.

I'll agree with kerry, your vac is too low, make sure you get a good seal when testing the vacuum pump.

I thought vacuum seemed low, I will check right of the pump to be sure. I definately need a new line, mine has been spliced...where can I purchase a new line? The transmission was shifting at a lower rpm until a replaced one of the lines.

The picture does not look like my setup.

Do any of the attachments relate to your car?

If you can, please post pics of your set up.

Okay, that, I believe, is a Euro unit, an "M" injection pump vacuum box, as opposed to an "MW" injection pump VCV we have here in the states.
Which would be why you're having a difficult time finding info on it.

Again, pics will be a big help.
