impossible to add remote start to w210?

so apparently i cant add remote start to my e300 with ir key. a spare chip is used for the remote start system ..and will work however once you introduce the 2nd ir chip (key that goes into dash) the mb computer flips out and shuts everything down.

so does anyone have remote start?..if so how did you make it work?

This might be a really stupid question....

But WHY on earth would you want to start your car--remotely in the first place??

--just seems a recipe for problems and possible local law infringements, not to mention safety issues and fuel wastages....

my new car alarm has it..it would be nice to start the car up every morning for a min or two before i hop in and go to work, would be nice to start the car in the 120 degree summer days to get the a/c running before i hop in...it has a turbo timer feature, and it would be nice to leave the car running (while locked and secure at the same time) when i run in to the 7-11 real quick for 30 seconds.

theres no life or death reason ... it would be a nice feature to have.

Ah, Fair enough....

But I do know in some places, its actually illegal to leave a car running (Even though it may be perfectly safe) when it is unattended.

Its illegal here in the UK--But people DO do it...

Places like Oxford apparently have an 'Anti Idling' By-Law that says that you mustn't leave the engine idling for more than a specific amount of time when stopped at the side of the road--All summit to do with pollution allegedly...

Worth checking with your local laws--just in case there's summit similar...

Keyless non-starter

There may indeed be similar laws in the USA but how many times have we seen big diesel trucks idling at a truck stop for hours on end? In cold climates, people have been known to leave their diesels idling at work all day . . . isn't it about time to resurrect that thread for those of us north of the equator?

I suspect that the enforcement of any such laws is very locality-dependent. Someone has to notice that your car is idling, call a cop, hang around while the cop shows up, point out your car, etc. Unlikely to happen "when i run in to the 7-11 real quick for 30 seconds." If your car isn't noisy or smoky and is in the middle of a big parking lot it isn't likely to be noticed.

As to locking it while it's running, a running W123 can be locked by just carrying a spare key. The W124 has a circuit that won't allow the central locking system to work when the ignition is on but I get around that with my after-market keyless remote. The W210 is a harder challenge that I haven't yet solved. You may be able to open the driver's door, then press the other three door buttons down, then close the driver's door and lock it with a spare key, a hassle.

Anything is possible but remote start of a W210 car may require so much hacking into the electrical system that it wouldn't be recommended. Probably easier to buy/rent a parking place where the car can stay warm or cool, depending on the season. Those forum members in the UK can just have their batman stand and hold an umbrella over the car.

In NC it is illegal to leave a vehicle running in public. so your 7-11 scenario would be a ticket-able offense. it makes an easy target for muggers/car thieves. and cops WILL give you a ticket for it.

im not talking about leaving it running all day. just a few mins before in the morning so i dont have a stone cold engine and have to sit in the car while it warms up before i jump on the road..

i guess theres a module that'll trick the computer and make it all work but it cost 800 dollars.

btw..ive lived in the midwest. its very common to leave the car running when the temp drops if your vehicle isnt in top shape its very hard to get it started in -50. ive never had a problem but alot of people cant seem to keep a car maintained. The police dont care, they only worry about speeders.

yup. in midwest or in suburban areas, it's not enforced, but it is still illegal. insurance companies forced the law, lower car thefts lower premiums. also, some policies don't cover your stolen car if it was left with keys in it or left running.
cops look at quickemarts specifically for idling cars to give citations.

You'd be better off installing an auxiliary heater.
