1st Gear Starts
My 1984 300SD always takes off in 1st. Everybody seems to say that this car takes off in 2nd. When I bought the car, I noticed it had very good acceleration and the "famous" firm 1-2 shift. The problem was the 1-2 shift was too late, requiring me to rev the engine higher than I'd like to. So, I loosened up the bowden cable as much as possible, and it it shifts nice. Why you think it takes off in 1st every time instead of 2nd?

Its supposed to accelerate in 1st every time. It stays in 2nd when waiting to prevent creep, then shifts to 1st as soon as you touch the throttle.

'81-'84 300SD - have 722.303 trans.
All 722.303 trans are 1st gear start.

Great. I can feel the that really quick downshift from 2nd to 1st. Thanks for the help.

my 81 SD definately srarts off in second gear ,what do I need to adjust for first gear starts???

Sorry, I can't help withe the second gear start problem. Does it start in 1st gear if you move shift lever to "L"? P E H

yes I can manualy shift it and often do on our steep drive way.......
