Nothing wrong with that as long as the gears you are replacing have the same number of teeth as the ones that came out. I like the odometer to be somewhat accurate. Also, something to consider is that the gears from a junkyard are probably in nearly the same condition as the ones you are replacing, so they MIGHT not last very long.

I'm pulling the cluster tonight. I suspect that the junkyard gear I installed a while back has lost some teeth as well. I'm going to go with new gears. Lubricant and plastic gears are not a good combination for long gear life.
The gear I replaced was the E2 gear. I did not replace the E3 gear which has the small gear on the bottom. I did not pull the E3 gear out and inspect. If I lost one tooth on the small gear, that might account for the lowering of the mileage by about 10%.

I pulled the cluster and found not only had the E2 gear I replaced a couple of weeks ago lost teeth on two separate locations, but the E1 gear had stripped out. I think it's not a case of if your odometer gears wear out, it's when!
Just for grins, I set two instrument clusters I got from Pull-a-Part on the kitchen table and looked at the gears in those odometers. Neither one had a complete set of working gears! Used gears are just a waste of time. I have ordered a complete set from Odometer Gears. I'll reply when I complete the replacement.

If you want to change the displayed mileage, best go see the most dishonest second hand car dealer you can find. He will be able to do it or know some one who can !!

I got the gears yesterday from Odometer Gears. Installed them today. They went together exactly as described.
Don't mess around with used gears. All of the used gears I have seen are so mushy that you can break off gear teeth with your fingernail. Sure, I would like the get the gears for less, but these guys have the correct, high quality gears that won't have to be replaced any time soon.

Go to www.odometergears.com. Click on Mercedes along the top of the home page. Then click on the "VDO Gear Replacement How To" about 1/3 down from the top of the Mercedes page. Pretty good pictures and text there.
