Turn the radio on, you won't notice the drone.
So you can hear the turbo through the exhaust pretty well, then?

'83 -has stock muffler but no resonators - great acceleration once turbo kicks in (can chirp tires) noisier - dronier at highway speeds than '85

'85 -stock - bit of a slug allround (taller gearing than the '83 also contributes to this)

Straight piped, no power loss. Did not hear as much turbo wine as I would have liked so I changed out the intake as well. Much better now. Turbo wine makes me giddie. A very fun car to drive, especially in the corners. Does not seem loud to me but then my other vehicle is an F350, 7.3L straight piped as well.

Off topic....

Idle before shutdown? Let the turbo rpm drop and allow temperatures to equalize, a bit - specifically where dissimilar metals meet. I'm paranoid about the heads on the '87's. I let 'em idle for about 30 sec. before I shut down. Especially after full throttle/freeway runs.

Jay.

Yeah. I do this. Hearing spin-down really makes one realize the importance even more - more awareness there is a turbo under the hood.

What other mods did you do? You take you merc to any muffler shop and they can install a straight pipe for you?

I swapped my intake/exhaust to federal and capped my EGR. Also installed boost controller, K and N filter, "cold air intake" (lol) and adjusted ALDA.

yes. There are two local guys who run their own shop and they do it for cheap. I think I paid $100 for pipe installed. All new from downpipe back. Diesels are emissions exempt in PA.

I would second the straight pipe. Love mine. I went with 3 inch from turbo back. No muffler, no res. But it is funny to listen to the turbo spin down through the exhaust pipe when you turn the engine off.

It's not to load at all.

One a side note, after I reassembled my car's exhaust system I now have a crazy awesome truck sounding engine!

I guess i cracked something somewhere and have a huge hole. Nonetheless, I will be replacing it with a straight pipe. The car sounds like a truck and I can hear the turbo spool up and the boost bleed off now

Well, my entire exhaust seems to be leaking. It always sounds like the car is wheezing and its really due for a muffler change. I might just go and do the whole straight pipe thing. The boost controller, adjusting of ALDA etc may just be a little more than I am comfortable with, but for sure, straight pipe and EGR sounds good to me...

I did some simple mods too. ALDA removed with boost gauge showing 10.5 psi under load and EGR out of the picture. Also ARV out of the equation.

ALDA is the easiest one you have listed.

I removed my ALDA and only boost 10.5. Does this sound abnormal? Also, not a whole lot of black smoke under load, but will if you rev it in park.
