Wipers acting up

Has anybody done any work on the wipers of their older Benz? I am having problems with ours.

The motor wants to work, but I think the linkage is so worn, it may be binding, causing the wipers to stop. The motor keeps pushing though which makes the motor really hot unless someone physically pushes on the wiper arm.

I wonder if I could lube the linkage to get a little more time, at least until the weather gets better and I don't need the wipers as much? I notice that to get into the assembly one needs to drill out two rivets. That is not real handy access to say the least.

Thanks for your interest,
Doug

I tore into the wipers this afternoon. They are pretty easy to get into. The rivets are just little plastic rivets that are to hold down the front of the decorative aluminum cover.

The linkage housing bearing surface is shot at the passenger side wiper shaft. I don't think there is anything else that can be done to it. I used some spray lithium grease to lube up the shafts and linkage and reassembled everything. I did not put the passenger side wiper back on, just to see how the drivers side would act. I think that wiper will work just fine by itself until I can get a new wiper housing and linkage. I think the motor is OK. The one wiper gets most of the windshield any way.
