I believe 90W is the standard I've put in every machine I have here at the house, including my 37 year old Cub Cadet rear differential. Go for the synthetic oil.

My '96 E300D uses Mobil-1 85/90 synthetic only because it gets into cold climates occasionally. If it never left California (like my '87 300D Turbo) I'd use dino oil. It takes just over a quart; you end up buying two quarts and having the leftover oil on the shelf for years until it's time to do it again, when you find that your leftover oil has been discontinued so you have to buy two quarts of something else . . . Murphy wins again.

I was advised that prior to draining the differential, that you make sure that you can get the fill plug out. In my case, try as I might, the fill plug would not budge. Took it to my mechanic, and had it changed for I believe $35 bucks. Well worth the price in time and aggravation.
