It says 300SD, it is a really a 3.5L Turbo.
I specifically asked him if it was a turbo, he said it was not.

Up till the mid 1990's the RHD diesels (603) were mainly N/A. Many went to Australia & South Africa. The turbo was in the way of the steering box. was said by MB to cause over heating problems with the power steering if the mounts were modified to make it fit. There were some aftermarket kits though. Same for the 617. The 3.5 never made it to Australia in the W140. Alastair our friend in GB may wish to comment on what was about over there.

It's a turbo because I can see the turbo in the engine bay. Odd that he doesn't know what he has.

Is the OM 603.97 the ONLY rod bender? Or do you go by the number on the cylinder head?

Or is it a rule of thumb that the OM 603.9x are all potential rod benders?

I don't know if it's that odd or not. There seems to be a title issue with the car also. He just posted the engine picture... and yes there seems to be a turbo in it. For some reason it sounds like a kid with a car.

I might be more interested in it if was not 17 hours away from me. Plus, is it me or does it look like it's been painted in flat black?

Not true. Several w201 years have the non turbo 602, and the 1994-1997 606 "E"class is non turbo.
