220D need oil cooler

i just bought a 220D, noticed it doesnt have an oil cooler hose connected. I called the previous owner and he said the oil cooler broke, so he just disconnected it. he never took the car for far drives so it wasnt an issue.... i would like to get this fixed. i cant find an oil cooler anywhere online for it. i read on a post elsewhere that a cooler from a 6 cylinder 108 would work.... does anyone know if this is true?

can i use a generic cooler as well? thanks

Just put an aftermarket one on. I don't know that it really needs one.

Take a trip to a junk yard & find one that looks the same. Make sure you replace the suply & return hoses as well. Given that you live on an island, are you going to be traveling at high speed for extended periods? If not dont get excited about the replacement.
vstech would be a good guy to get a second hand one from. Go for new hoses though.

Everyone remember, he needs a W115 or W108 cooler, a W123 cooler will not fit. I know of someone with a good used 115 one, shoot me a PM and i'll let you know.

the 240 cooler is about 1/2 the size of a 300 cooler, and what difference does it make what body the cooler itself came from? he'll need hoses for his car of course, and I assume since the car HAD a cooler, he already had a cooler in there, and the PO removed it. so it stands to reason the cooler provisions are present.
wouldn't they attach to a 240 cooler?

The difference is the way it mounts to the body of the car. The W115 cooler mounts in a totally different way, thats why you need a W115 or W108/9 cooler.

OK, I'm lost with this thread. On my 220D's, the oil cooler (engine oil) and radiator are all one piece, I think soldered together. I don't understand how IVIuzzy's radiator can be mounted in the car without the cooler built onto its left side.

I do have a parts car with radiator and cooler as a unit, so PM me if you want. Neither leak.

However, I feel the cooler is still there, it just needs the hoses. The PO must removed the hoses and plugged at the filter.

I seem to remember the 115 and the 123 four cylinder oil coolers look very similar. Are you sure a 123 four cylinder cooler won't work?

I wish i had a picture on me of both the oil coolers, W123 versus a W115 cooler.

They are similar but not quite. The W115 cooler is bolted to the radiator(just like the 123) and then the 115 radiator unit slides down into place, and then there are 2 rubber donuts on both the left and right sides which you have to stretch out and hook onto hooks that are on the radiator support.

The W123 radiator unit is connected to the body of the car by rubber buffers along with 2 metal S-clips on the front of the radiator.

From your description it sounds as if the 115 and 123 coolers might still interchange.

Unless you do some special fabricating/modifications on the 123 cooler the entire right side of the radiator will not be connected to the body if put in a 115 car.

This is the mounting kit for the cooling system on a W115

OK, I went down and measured my '71 220D in the garage. The radiator is about 21" wide, the cooler is about 3.75" wide.

t walgamuth is correct, they do bolt together.

I still do not understand how one could easily get the radiator mounted without the cooler. When the two are bolted together, they slide into the opening against rubber shims, one shim on each side of the opening. On the right side of the radiator and left side of the cooler there's a long "bump" which keys into the rubber shim that holds the radiator vertical, then the rubber donuts mentioned by 79Mercy hold the radiator down into those shims.

In the parts book, I see 115 504 00 84 described as "filler". Maybe that's what is needed to fill the space if the oil cooler is omitted. Regardless, I've never seen a filler, only the coolers.

So my question remains, is there really a cooler missing in this case? How is the radiator mounted without a cooler, a filler? And if a cooler is needed, I'll be happy to unbolt one from a radiator, just PM me. However, I would think it would be on any car in a junk yard locally, all the ones I know of here still have theirs.
