I've been offered a rebuilt automatic transmission from a 1984 300SD. Can I drop it right into my 1987 300SDL?

No. The transmission for a 61x engine and for a 60x engine are different in the bellhousing/mount and not interchangeable.

Might be able to trade for something though.
