1987 300D Transmission noisy above 50mph

I got on the highway today and as I accelerated to 50 mph, an awful noise started coming from the automatic transmission and the gearshift started vibrating a lot.

When I go faster or press on the gas it gets louder and when I let off on the gas it goes away.

Everything works smoothly at city driving speeds, but as soon as I get about 50mph it sounds like metal is grinding.

The transmission fluid is not low and I replaced the transmission filter a year ago.

I did put some transmission stop-leak in a couple weeks ago because the transmission fluid was leaking quite a bit. The leak has slowed down since then. Could the stop-leak be a cause of this?

Thanks

When you are under there checking the flex discs if they look OK have a look at the center driveshaft bearing and its rubber mounting.Don

May as well also look at the transmission mount. It might be shot allowing metal to metal contact.

Flex disk &/or mounts have probably been weakened by the leaking fluid.

I took the car to a aamco for a free transmission diagnostic. They kept it for a day and said the problem was the overdrive gear and it would be $2500 to rebuild it.

I looked under there and found that the problem is the flex discs - They are cracking and badly worn.

I have 2 new flex discs and am ready to install them.

What do I need to remove to get at this? The exhaust? Rear transmission mount?

Is there anything I need to know before I begin?

Thanks!
