Rebuilding front end on Norm

Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of collecting parts to rebuild Norm's front end. I'm going to start with the suspension, then work my way through the steering components.

Before I ordered parts I wanted to make sure I had everything so that I don't realize I'm missing a part halfway through.

So here is my list so far:

Shocks
Springs
Lower Ball Joints
Upper Control Arms (Left and Right)
Control Arm Bushings
Control Arm Bushing Kit
Guide Rod Mount
Wheel Seals
Wheel Bearing Kit

Am I missing anything else?

Thanks!

Colin

You need the guide rod bushings where the rod connects to the lower control arm.

New spring pads might not be a bad thing either.

You have to pull the rotors off the spindle, so you might think about wheel bearings, but either way you will need new wheel seals for sure.

I dont think the W123's don't have "guide rod to support bearing brackets".

I updated the list in the first post, however I can't seem to find the LCA bushings that Stewart is talking about. Can you point me in the right direction?

Also note that I'll be doing the steering components at a later date.

Ahh yes thats not a control arm bushing. They call it a Guide Rod repair kit - http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1980-Mercedes--Benz-300td-Suspension&yearid=1980%40%401980&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&modelid=6229%3AED%7C10000132%3AMBC%7C2515%40%40300TD&catid=241464%40%40Suspension&subcatid=241520@@Guide+Rod+Repair+Kit&mode=PD

^Ahh, so that's what that is! I thought that was for a guide rod mount repair kit.

Sweet looks like I should start to order some parts!

Don't forget to get hold of a spring compressor - an internal spring compressor - that is the safest way to remove W123 front springs. These springs are scary.

I would be surprised if you needed to replace the springs - you can adjust the ride height quite a lot with use of the the spring support pads that you fit above the spring.

I borrowed a spring compressor from member Delivery Valve here. I paid postage both ways. Here is his profile - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/member.php?u=33259

^^Thanks for posting those links, they will be really helpful when I tackle this I'm sure.

I'm not so sure I need to replace the springs either, but I mean as long as I'm down there replacing everything else I thought "why not?" It's the shocks I'm most concerned about, as well as all the 30-year-old pieces of rubber and ball joints.

I will for sure be renting the proper Klann style spring compressor for this job.

Will fenders be coming as well?

I'm amazed at how quickly you've picked all this stuff up. Clearly you are in the right field of study. I look at a front suspension and scratch my head. I watched Roy rebuild (more like beat into submission) a front suspension and I realized it was out of my league. Then again, oil changes have proved out of my league.

Good luck, friend!

^Fenders will be done long before this project will be. I'm only compiling parts for now for the front end, but this will be my "spring" project.

I am pretty amazed too, I guess I have a bad habit of taking things apart and putting them back together. It's how I learn though.

If it makes you feel better I think finding the cars you do and then selling them is out of my league
