Transmission flare going up steep hill

Yesterday while in the 1984 300DT, I pulled out onto a road which was going up a steep hill. As I stepped on the go pedal, the transmission didn't engage and the engine revved up. I backed off the accelerator some and the transmission then engaged. The rest of the day the car shifted normal. Drove it again today and experienced normal shifting. The car has never exhibited this type of behavior in the past. Any ideas?

It is slipping, typical damaged trans symptom.
Sounds like you may be ok for a while if you tighten modulator just a bit to the right, you may get up to 50k more miles out of it but the shifts will be harder.

as always, check your fluid, and if it's been over 30K since a fluid and filter change, consider it.

I'm just wondering if the car might be a candidate for a Superior shift kit. Thoughts?

It's probably low transmission fluid. when you check the fluid levelm the car must be running and up to temp. also it's a good idea to go through all gears. I had a 76 240D that ran for years with a transmission leak. when it started flaring on the highway, I'd add a quart of trans fluid.

Also could be a dirty filter

Ditto, fluid level.

You can use the later type filter that allows the fluid pick-up to move back & forth.
They will fit any of the 722.3 transmissions.

Since this particular flare occurred while starting out going up a fairly steep hill, I"m wondering if the transmission filter didn't pick up the fluid properly......
