Any Tricks to Replacing 240D Water Pump?

I have a small leak at the packing hole on the water pump. I think it's a cold weather leak, but I'm not willing to take any chances.

I searched and didn't find much on replacing the water pump. It appears to be easy to get to, but there seem to be so many things on these cars that are different than US cars, so I want to make sure there is nothing that I need to be aware of when changing it.

Thanks for any help offered.

An easy swap. A ground down 10mm box end wrench is helpful in removing the fan itself.

You also need to remove that metal cross over pipe, you'll see it, otherwise, straight forward.

Just did this job on my 85 Euro which should be the same as yours up front. I pulled the radiator but didn't have to slack off the alt/w/p belt. Just pull the pulley off the w/p, and put it back on when you replace the pump, belt in place .You wont need the ground down wrench for the job.
It helps to use a little "Blue RTV" to hold the gasket in place while you get a couple bolts started.

Grey RTV is much more stylish though

Make sure the "blue"is complementary to the blue RTV

I think I might use something like "Never Seize", allot of those bolts have been broken off, I've gotten a couple

Thanks for all the responses. It doesn't sound like there's any tricks with this job as is with some of the other things on this car.

I should have the water pump Friday and get it done this Saturday.

Thanks to all.

I gotta agree with the neversieze. but what ever you put on the bolts, CLEAN THEM REALLY WELL WITH A WIRE BRUSH!
biggest tip I can give you is have a really good socket that fits the bolt heads well. they are small bolts, and if they are stuck you will break them.

Thanks for your help everybody. I got it finished and it was a pretty straight forward job.

I really like working on this little car. Things are easily accessible and simple. It is kind of like a modern day Model A.
