Finally worked on the 84 190D

Spent 6 hours on the 190D, put new main and rod bearings in and the new used crankshaft. Removed old piston rings and cleaned pistons, put new rings on and put pistons in the block. That is alot of work but I love working on mercedes diesel motors, here are some pictures.

Was there much of a ring groove (wear) in the cylinder walls topmost area...?

Nope, there is a very small groove but it will be ok. The cylinder walls are in great shape.

New rings

Yep...On engines that the customers just wanted re-ringed....we would remove the ridge with a reamer to keep new rings from breaking should they contact the under lip of ridge.....
If its small enough to not cause problem....we would just hone the cylinders to re-establish the crosshatch pattern....

Someone told me about that, I think I will be ok. Pistons with new rings are in, when I turn motor by hand everything works good. If there is a problem would I be able to tell when I turn the motor by hand?

The time to worry about damaging a ring was when you installed them - if they went in smoothly then I guess you'll have no trouble. You are more likely to damage them during installation particularly with a bit of a ridge at the top of the cylinder. You don't always need a ridge reamer - smaller ridges can be safely removed with careful use of emery cloth.

First time putting new rings on and putting pistons in motor and they went in just fine. So I should be fine, I hope.
