New starter for 1996 E300

I need a new starter for my 1996 E300. I am looking at the remanufactured bocsh and the new NSA. The new NSA has a better warranty, doesn't require a core and is cheaper. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with either or both of these starters?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

For starters/alternators I would ONLY put on a German Bosch Re manufactured part. You can get one right here on this site.

Thanks Jeremy, a very nice thread! BTW, why did you replace the starter in your 96 E300?....did it fail or? The reason I ask is b/c mine seems to turn the motor over very slowly....I have a new battery and all connections seem good, clean and tight. I am hoping that replacing the starter will improve the turnover rate....my '97 E300 turns over much faster.

After 14 years its going to be tired/shot. Replace it with a good German one and it should fire up like new.

Starter solenoid failure

In July 2009 the '96 started having intermittent "failure to crank" problems. I eventually determined that it had to be the starter and ordered a Bosch rebuilt from an online vendor. When I removed the old starter, I discovered that the pinion gear would flop in and out at will (it is supposed to be withdrawn under spring tension until the solenoid or "Bendix" pushes it out).

This was the original starter -- 13 years, 8 months, and 262,211 miles. The rebuilt starter was US$190 including shipping plus US$8.48 to recover the US$75 core charge for a total out of pocket cost to me of US$198.45 or US$0.0008 per mile.

Jeremy
