You guys wanna talk about having fun with glow plugs, check out the Jeep forums and see what Chrysler is pulling aka the Liberty CRD's - a forced change from 7 V ceramics to 5 V metal - the same BS that VW tried pulling a year ago on the TDI owners.

Gee, too bad I've got 2 spare sets of 7 V ceramics, and will just have to pass up on this "upgrade".

Hey Forced welcome back!

Why? I did say:

"I unsoldered from the PC board since I do not know if not unsoldering them will do any damage to the electronic circuitry."

Apparently it doesn't? I will solder the relay coil back so the glow plugs come on automatically with the key as well as manually whenever I push the botton.

It takes me less than a minute to pull a glow plug so it's no big deal.

Layback40, does this pic concern you? What do your glow plugs look like? How about a pic?

I am not about to take perfectly good GP's out to take a pic. Your pic looks very sooty, was that GP bad?
One of the problems comparing GP's is that if you only do short runs, ,<5 miles, everything claggs up from not having a chance to burn hot. When ever our cars are started its going to be a 50 mile trip at least. When ever I have checked the GP's they are clean, no soot on the tip.
I have no idea what winter diesel does to them either. Its going to be 90+ F today, the car will get 2X 1/2 hr runs @ 70 mph. There wont be much soot on the GP's.
I continue to watch with considerable interest how you get on. We use up to 20,000 gallons of diesel a year. The best alt I have found is atf , its too much of a PITA to collect though. We use WVO in the wood heaters in the winter, it blocks the chimney up if you dont give it a good hot burn on straight wood every week or so.
You probably are very picky as to what oil you use, there is a limit to how much "good" oil there is. The next guy gets the junk.

Good Luck !!

That glow plug is fine, pic was taken after a 65 hwy miles drive. Any other opinion on the soot on the glow plug? I believe it is normal, the same thin layer of soot would be on the head and valve faces.

I personally would not want to mess with used ATF, used motor oil, used hydraulic oil etc as fuel, been doing so well on WVO since 95 with over 120K miles with no engine or fuel system problems. There are many ways to filter, some good, some not so good. You cannot learn everything from reading. Reading helps, but you have to actually do it to learn what works and what does not.

with all the stuff left in used motor oil, I'll pass on putting it in my fuel for sure. ever looked at an analysis? the IP has very close tolerances... too much wear for me.
