questions about pulling head on '87 SDL

'87 300 SDL with 240K(approximately)
It started smoking very badly on startup(worse that a typical diesel). It smells like burnt oil (kind of like the smell you get when a valve cover leaks onto an exhaust. It will last for about 20 seconds, then tapers down to what I would consider a typical diesel.
It also started burning oil as I am driving, and smokes heavily when I accelerate.

Many Mechanics(including myself) believe that it is the valve stem seals and guides.
I started pulling the head, and as soon as I get rail pins out, I will be read to take the head to a machine shop.

I have R&R many heads, and between the friend that is helping me, we probably have over 100 cars in which we have R&R heads. So we both feel comfortable that we can get in all back together fine, even though neither of us have pulled the head on an MB.
My biggest question is this:
Am I going to have to time the Injector pump when through??

Also,
Is there any precautions that I should take prior to lifting the head, to prevent any catastrophes during install?
Does anyone know of a location where I can print out instruction on how to R&R the head??

Much thanks in advance.
PS-I know you are probably thinking that I should have done more preliminary work prior to starting, but I decided to pay a mechanic to do it, and he got started on it, and quit, so I am kind of stuck in a position that I would prefer not to be in!!

The injection timing will be as when you last ran the engine if you put it all together and do not rotate the engine while the cam chain is hanging loose. If it is close to the same as the 617, the preferred stopping place is with engine in position with #1 cylinder in TDC location, 0 degrees on the front pulley marker and the cam marker lined up with the sprocket mark.

There is enough information on this site to do the job. Best printed instructions I have found are in the British Chilton's repair book.

A hoist is recommended. I was able to remove and replace the head myself with the manifolds, cam and lifters removed. Cam bolts have a sequence to follow on removal and replacement. Take off the vac pump to remove it's influence on moving the timing chain.

If the head height is reduced the pre chambers may have to be shimmed.
