transmission hard shifting need to let go of throttle to shift

1985 Mercedes 300 turbo diesel automatic tranny. It has a hard time shifting. Its a hard shift but i have to let go of the throttle in order for it to shift. Is their any kind of band J bolt adjustment that needs to be re-tuned or does the tranny need to come off for repair?

Before making any band adjustments or removing the transmission you should troubleshoot your vacuum system and bowden cable. Hard shifts are usually an indication of low vacuum.

Look up bowden cable adjustment, throttle linkage adjustment and stuck kickdown solenoid.

Check for bad vacuum line at the transmission modulator.

If I'm reading Layback correctly, you need to unscrew the bolt on your bowden cable (with a warm engine/tranny) one half to one full turn, then go for a test drive and see how it shifts. Watch the cable and make sure that as you are unscrewing it the cable is slackening. Monitor closely how far you have unscrewed it because you may want to unscrew it even more. If that doesn't help then you may want to learn the vacuum system of the 722's.

so i should do a vacuum test first by the transmission? I have a vacuum tester, should i unplug the vacuum lines by the transmission and see what psi they are blowing at? We changed the vacuum pump last year.
