battery light staying on all the time 82 300SD

Anyone ever had this problem? Its an 1982 300SD .
I came out from work and noticed it was on. Then when starting the idiot light array did not go on, only the glow plug light. After starting the batt light goes out. Shut the car off, take the key out and the light stays on. Drained the battery flat overnight.
Put in the battery from my other Benz and its the same thing.
Anyone?

Wow thanks for the reply

May I ask what the rebuilt alt. cost you?
I was doing another search with different terms and some posts point to an external regulator at the back of the alt?
That is about $77 ?
Something to the effect that the brushes come out with the reg?
Its very cold here in Minnesota right now, I dont really want to crawl around underneath to mess with it.
