Scary Road Trip this weekend

Hi all,
Had an interesting trip from West Monroe to Tuscaloosa and back Saturday and Sunday. Had the 86 300sdl loaded down with my daughter's dorm room needs. School starts again on Wed, so Dear old Dad loaded his old Benz and her Camry and we hit the road. I just finished new rear brake hoses, and a new Master Cylinder last weekend so this would be a great trip to see how good I did with my repairs.
Saturday was aglorious day, clear blue sky, 45 degrees, and the Benz was humming. 5 hour trip, 320 miles, 28 mpg. Love it!! What a great ride this old Benz is! Brakes are just fine now. I also performed an " Italian Tuneup" on some of the hills on the way, and after about 175 miles, no more black smoke out the exhaust. Lots of good grey smoke with full throttle, idles smoother now too.
Saturday night I started hearing the Weather channel reports on bad weather coming in from Texas, so I hit the road at 7AM to head back today. Beautifull 22 degree morning in Tuscaloosa with a pretty sunrise. 80 miles west near Meridian, MS the freezing rain started. It continued to Jackson,MS with lots of cars off the Interstate in the trees. Kudos to the Mississippi DOT for sanding the bridges on I-20 in Jackson, but that still did not keep people that were driving way too fast from sliding off the Interstate. Then at Vicksburg it was really bad, too many hills, too many bridges, but my dear old Benz just kept humming along. MS river bridge was good and so was the first 50 miles into LA, but then it got bad at Rayville all the way into Monroe.
My defrost and heat were excellent, how I love how Mercedes makes sure the door panels are heated when you drive.
Back home safely, 28 mpg again.
What a great, safe, secure car. They do not build cars like this anymore.
Glad to be home safely as the weather is just awful here. Ice Storms are the worst in the South. No one is prepared, and we do not have plow trucks or salt trucks.
Hope all are safe during this rotten weekend, Atlanta and the East coast are next!!!

the best feature of the SDL's and MB's in general is the coolant heated windshield glass. that along with the heated washer fluid reservoir is simply an amazing ice resistance vehicle.
the best part of the car is of course a cautious driver ready to avoid the potential suicide driver!!!

Hey, John, how does that work? Most cars I've driven have a heater box like a radiator that transfers heat from the coolant to air forced through it and up onto the windshield... are you saying that there is some circulatory mechanism by which heat is conducted directly from coolant to glass in some models?

YUP.
coolant lines directly attached to the glass at the bottom mount of the glass! really amazing feature. not sure of the models that are equipped with it, but I believe the 124's 90 up have it, and 2nd gen 126's 86+ I believe... possibly the models with the heated washer fluid have it?
Whunter posted a link to the specs of it, a few months ago.

I think you're right John. Mercedes paid a lot of attention to rain and snow management on the glass. It's too bad they didn't include limited slip differentials as standard equipment as well

I've never heard of that either, any clue if the W211 has that feature?

Easy enough to see, look for coolant lines running to the base of the windshield glass. They're not too hard to spot on the W126. Could also peruse EPC I suppose.

A good auto glass shop would probably be aware of whether your car has this feature... it probably complicates replacement of the windshield quite a bit compared to their usual customers.

I think it was listed as a feature on the window sticker.

It wasn't to heat the glass, glass doesn't conduct heat very well.

It was to heat the steel under the screen which kept the monowiper free from icing up.

I was aware of the heated washer fluid but not the heated glass. How would that even work??

One of mine (the one without the snow tires) has the washer heater working fine...the other one has it disabled because the heater stayed on and kept evaporating the fluid. That was done in TX; but now that we're in RI, I sometimes wonder whether I should get it fixed.
