Great forum
Great forum, it has been invaluable for a number of
DIY fix-its for our diesel MBs. Many thanks to one and all. First time Benz owner and first time diesel owner as of 2001. We have a '79 240D stickshift, caledonia green with unknown mileage and a '75 240D automatic, english red with 210k miles. Both daily drivers and both sort of rolling restorations. They're getting steadily better with some time put in, a few dollars, good shop manuals and this wonderful forum. |

Welcome to the fold. You are right, this forum is invaluable. There is no way I would know what I do know so far, without this forum. You mentioned that you are first time Benz owners. Did you know that just by owning a Mercedes you can get free roadside assistance. Should you need a jump start, a flat tire change or need a little fuel, you just need to call Mercedes roadside assistance. MB policy is no matter how old, how many past owners or how many miles a Benz has, it will be covered. I have yet to need to call for assistance, but the fact that I can call for help is reassuring.
Also your cars qualify for the "High Mileage Award" program. All you need to do is fill out an application, have dealer verify the odometer reading, send the application in and MB will send you a grille badge FREE. Again welcome

To R.Jordan, I didn't know about the roadside assistance,
thank you for the information. And a tip of the hat to moderator TXBill. Question about the idle control on a 240D. On the '75 soft detent clicks can be felt as it turns, steadily increasing the idle speed. On the '79 not much happens as the idle control is turned until right near the stop, then it depresses the accelerator pedal slightly, sufficient for starting. Is this a worn idle control cable on the '79?

Road Side Assistance
How do you contact this free roadside assistance. My dad, original owner did not bring me into the loop on this service.

This forum is excellent,...... actually super duper excellent!!! In considering the purchase of a w123 diesel I stumbled across this forum, and boy am I glad. It has a done a couple things for me:
Affirmed that buying a used MB diesel is the way to go.(although my wife is probably tired of hearing me say this daily ) Increased my knowledge of this type of car ten-fold. I have learned a vast of amount of info. from this forum & its members. I'm constantly amazed by the know how & MB experience of many of you out there. Bravo! Aivars PS All I have to do now is find a car here in the wilds of Eastern Canada . |

On the back of my MBCA card, it list a different number ofr Roadside assistance. I have 1-800-367-6372. Yet, the sticker in the glovebox to my TD has the same 1-800-222-0100 number. I guess they both would work.

The 1-800-367 number is the one always advertised as their point of contact number. You know, 1-800-FOR-MERC(edes)
