85 SD MASSIVE clunk in diff, and noisy accessories
Hello!
today's project is a really shiny 85SD. a really pretty example. unfortunately it's in my arena due to the issues the owner is facing. #1 is a bad motor mount. REALLY bad. no splash shield on it either... I recently adjusted the valves, and did a minor tuneup on the girl. today's efforts are focusing on the charging system and the noises in the driveline. I'm going to focus on the alternator as the accessory noise, since the battery is going dead... but the clunk in the diff sounds like massive wear in the teeth. finding a replacement 2.88 is gonna be fun... I'll take pics if the owner wants me to go forward with this much repair work.

Does that car have splash shields(heat shields) on both motor mounts or only the drivers side?
I ask because mine only has it on the drivers side. Not sure if the other was removed and not replaced or what.

my 82 has a shield on both sides. the driver's side shield is shaped differently. I can take pics if you like.

here's the list so far on what I think the car needs.
1. replacement alternator 2. charge and investigate the battery life 3. new motor mounts on both sides with new shields. 4. replace fuel filters in engine bay. 5. replace all the injector return hoses. 6. change all accessory belts. 7. replace the differential 8. replace the flex disks... the coolant tank is very clean and white, showing green coolant, so that will get flushed. the driver's window does not go all the way up, and the driver's seat is flat. anybody wanna recommend anything else to investigate?

I do not like the splash shields. They hide when fuel gets in there and makes it hard to get out...

Some years ago there was a picture on here of the internals of a thunking differential. It wasn't the teeth but a pin which had elongated its hole.
