CDI buying advice

I got tired of my E300 96 and I am looking to upgrade. I am looking at the new 2005 CDI or 2007 Bluetech. Can you tell me more about what model I should avoid Also I don't want to get in to "add-blue"type of think. i have enough fluids to worry about. Are the new 2011 bluetech the "add-blue"type?

the adblu only needs to be added once in awhile, so as far as maintenance on that goes you'd fill it when you fill the car with diesel, not that huge of a deal

adblue is refilled at each 10K service, not with each tank of fuel, it isn't that big a deal. For some reason people think this is something so intrusive it should preclude them from buying the car. The cost isn't too terrible either, under $100 for enough fluid to refill it. You can buy a single bottle of it for under $10 to keep in the trunk just in case you run out before the 10K service so you aren't left "stranded" but the system will warn you when the level gets low anyway.

The newer ones have some nicer features that the older ones don't, like advanced NAV and color backup cameras. The '05 and '06 had issues with their braking systems which some people will tell you is a deal killer.

Avoid the junk V6 engine. That means look at 05-06 models.

The V6 diesel is a rather durable and proven motor at this point.....its been used in the sprinter vans for a while now.

Didn't they start using the Ad-Blue with the '09 or '10 E320's? I seem to remember the early Bluetecs didn't use it.

My 2008 E320

is a pre-AdBlue car. It is powerful, quiet and durable but .... I don't like it very much. This is my wife's car.

DIY except for the most basic of fluid changes is impossible. Pop off that engine cover and one glance will tell you what I'm trying to say. The thought of paying labor costs for anything corrective is chilling although nothing has yet broken.

I also am not crazy about the overall "feel" of the car. The car offers too many bells and whistles and the driving experience seems remote. It is a superb interstate cruiser but I much prefer my 560SL.

NONE of the E Class diesels used Adblue until 2011 (there was no 2010 E320).

Contrary to one post (above), which has no real support for his claim, I have never heard anyone have anything negative to say about the V6.

Also, everyone treats Adblue like it is cancer. It's not that big a deal - the stuff costs about $7 a bottle, it's non toxic and fuel still costs about 10X-20X as much as Adblue does to consume. People are under the impression it is a lot of work, but you just fill up the bottle at every (10K mile) service...it's part of the emissions system so if anything goes wrong with the system it is covered under the extended federally mandated emissions warranty.

There are no years of the 2005 and Up E320 W211 that I would necessarily avoid.

That said, the main differences between the older 2005,06 CDIs and the newer 2007 and Up Bluetec, is, the CDIs have a I6 engine configuration, and 5-speed transmission.

The 2007 and Up Bluetecs have a V6 engine configuration, and a 7-speed transmission.

Either the CDI or Bluetec are good choices, IMO.

It was designed as a throwaway engine, its not rebuildable and its an overall very poor design compared to the previous I-6.

Also, which would you rather work on when the warranty is up?

Neither. They both look like they were designed by the same person who was responsible for Ford's last three diesel efforts.

Speaking of the newer diesels, anyone who is brave enough to buy and keep one of these sooner or later will face the glow plug replacement issue, just think about what is in store for doing the job, and heaven forbid if that involves frozen/stuck glow plugs.

My father in law is deciding on a new(er) car this year. He likes the Cadillac and the Benz. not very familiar with the new diesel benz's, I am not sure what to consider looking at.

How many miles have some of you driven to date? Total mileage. Curious about cost of ownership over 150K miles.

Comments?
