Wrong Air Cleaner?

On my 81' 300D, I've suspected I have the wrong air cleaner for a while and finally got around to snapping some pics. I have a tube that runs from the valve cover to the intake (beneath the air cleaner) but also a spot on top of the cleaner where a tube should be attached. I've looked through pics of other people's engine bays and seen all kinds of different configurations. Some have a line that goes to a second port on the vac pump, but my pump has only the one outlet. I'm thinking that maybe someone put the air cleaner from a turbo on my car, which leaves that stack on top and likely means unfiltered air is running through there? Another strange thing - went to a local foreign auto parts store for a new filter, and the filter they sold me is about 1.5" too tall to fit in this housing . . . so either I got the wrong filter, or I have the wrong air cleaner housing. Anyone have '81 engine bay pics, or know what the proper setup should be?

Thanks,
Eric
