83 300CD Cold Idling Oddity

On my 83 300CD (246,000), the car always started up perfectly (even in 15F weather), but it always has had a "miss" or "flutter" when idling cold. I exhanged the injectors, but no improvement. I have also checked for air leaks. ODDLY, this morning, I put the car in drive and the idle was perfect. I put in back in park & the miss/flutter returns. Likewise, in drive, there is no fluttering. What could be causing this? In driving MB diesels for 30 years, I have never experienced this, nor heard anyone mention this. Thanks!

Richard

My 240d does it too.

I also replaced injectors, adjusted valves etc. but it is a lumpy, jumpy idler in park and smooth in drive.
I have not replsced motor mounts but they look ok

What is your idle speed in Drive?

It could not hurt to try an adjustment of the Rack Dampner Screw.

Valve adjustment?

A couple of Members have said that stretching the Spring in their Fuel Injection Pump Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve to the limit that the Manual allows helped.

Mine idles better in Park than in Drive also but I do not feel that it is actually rough.
