1998 E300 turbodiesel purchased!!!!! Where to start????

I just purchased a 98 E300 turbodiesel with 98,000. The po told me that the car has been sitting for awhile, indoors by the way, and thinking what should I look for or where should I start. Had the car on the lifts before I made the deal and everything looked fine, suspension, new exhaust, frame is clean with no rust bust there is a small spot on the drivers side front fender where it meets the door. Few pics..

Thanks

Looks great! Congratulations. It looks like Marty's old car.

I would do the basics: Change oil and filter and check the fuel pre-filter and change the main fuel filter. All this so you can at least have it at a baseline. You'll need to buy the special dip stick to check the tranny fluid as there is none hidden behind the cap on the tube.

You can stop calling it a TD. It is a 98 300D. Search for perch failure and make sure your car is not succeptable.

After that the sky is the limit. So much you can do with a om606. Even just an ECU chip will net you some more than modest HP gains.

I almost walked away on the deal as the PO would not budge on the price or even come down $1 dollar. Hard to believe how some people who sell cars for a living stay in business???? I am of the opinion that you give a little and take a little, it works both ways. Its all about offer and couteroffers until you come to an agreement which both sides are happy with. I had to give in, but damn was I a bit ticked off at the seller.

That's just what I thought

Mine had nearly 2X the miles on it when I sold it though!

Check the spring perches for rust. Did you get any service records with it? If not do complete fluid service including the tranny (use the right fluids). Lots of good information here, just ask.

Hey Thanks Marty. I was told that paperwork will be provided when I pick up the car in a few days with all the service records included. I also have the carfax, don't know if that really means much though. Did not look at the spring perches, but when on the lifts did not see any rust underneath!!! As mentioned there is a small rust spot on the passenger front fender where it meets the door. The final price was $9900. Opinions wanted...was that a fair price?

I consider that a good price. I would have paid that.

If the service records are complete and the car needs nothing the price was probably OK. Not a bargain but not bad either, considering the low miles. The spring perch rust sometimes isn't easy to see, in fact sometimes it is invisible because it is behind sealant, but examine closely where the perches are welded to the frame rail and make sure everything there looks perfect. It is one of the weak parts of this chassis design.

he played the deal right for him then didn't he!
He knew you wanted it. He knew he could get the $$ for it eventually, He got you to buy it.
personally, I'd have looked for an 87. I'm not fond of the computers in the 98. I'm sure it's more powerful, and better on fuel than any 87 is, but I can buy a LOT of fuel with 7,500.000 Heck, I could find a fantastic 87D and still have 3 or 4K to buy fuel with!

The 87 is a nice car John but I was looking for something more modern. I already had a 93 Turbo diesel with a tranny that crapped out at 250,000. I have a 93 300e 2.8 as my daily driver and is great, wire harness and front engine seal already replaced...car drives great... I might ship this 98 across the atlantic for my father...

The seller agreed today to change all the fluids, oil, transmission, and fuel filters before I pick up the car in a few days and have the spring perch looked at by an outside shop before the deal is done. So I feel a little vindicated over the prior difficulty of striking a deal for the car. I never mentioned that I am buying from a dealer (non mercedes) and not private seller.

Make sure they only use the recommended fluids - Synthetic 5w/40 like Mobil 1 Turbodiesel Truck and especially Shell 134 ATF.

If not, they'll be doing you more harm than good.

In fact they are ETDs.

Proof: My 1999 300 ETD's MSO Badge of Truth.

It's called an ETD because it is what Mercedes-Benz calls 'em!
